Basil Hayden Bourbon is made by Jim Beam Distillery. It is created using the high-rye Old Grand Dad mash bill, which purportedly contains about 27% Rye in the mash. Bottled at 40%.
When Basil Hayden Sr. began distilling his smooth bourbon in 1796, the state of Kentucky was only 4 years old and George Washington was president of the United States! Hayden was born and raised in Maryland, where he learned to make whiskey from rye. When he came to Kentucky, Hayden began making whiskey from a base of corn, but added a higher percentage of rye than other distillers, resulting in a smooth, mild bourbon that was distinctly his own.

"The Watchtower is The Maligne Range’s interpretation of a peated Canadian whisky – bringing together Canadian and Scottish traditions without adhering too closely to either. Built from Canadian malt with 30% heavily peated Scottish malt, it introduces smoke with intent – layered, controlled, and integrated into the structure of the whisky, with notes of soft smoke, and apple, citrus, and dark caramel carried through with clarity.
Process and maturation bring the elements into alignment. Blending is approached with restraint, allowing the peat to remain present without overwhelming the foundation. The result is a whisky where smoke adds depth and contrast, supported by grain and structure rather than dominating it.
Named after The Watchtower Mountain, a 2,791-metre peak in Jasper National Park, it reflects a sense of clarity and exposure-defined by structure, visibility, and more pronounced edge. Within the range, it marks a shift: where contrast becomes more defined and the profile begins to push further."

We have endeavoured to make each of these 5 tastings equally interesting, with a comparable balance of products with respect to price, age, and style. Each tasting has a whisky over 23 years of age, and the average over all the tastings, excluding the 6 NAS bottlings, is 17.8 years. Each tasting also includes at least 1 KWM Cask, 1 peated whisky, and 1 whisky which is not a Scottish single malt.
"Each tasting kit includes 5 - 28ml top-secret premium whiskies. The name of each whisky is a closely guarded secret and has been redacted. KWM Staff have either been sworn to secrecy or are suffering from an entirely unrelated bout of short-term memory loss. You'll have to log in to the tasting on Zoom from a secure location using the QR code on the box for a classified debriefing on all 5 whiskies, Thursday, December 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, and 27th, 2024, @ 7 PM MT.
