The Annapolis Valley is a long, relatively narrow valley located on the western edge of Nova Scotia, situated between two parallel mountain ranges, along the shores of the Bay of Fundy. Close proximity to the Bay of Fundy and the world’s highest tides creates an incredibly unique growing environment with tremendous potential for the production of distinctive cool-climate wines. They have 40 acres of vines planted on two distinct sites along the shores of the Minas Basin, an inlet of the Bay of Fundy, where hilly slopes extend the frost free period and provide excellent exposure. Natural airflow and incessant saltwater breezes off the basin provide an important moderating effect, especially critical during the winter months when temperatures dip below freezing. Throughout the growing season, these same cool breezes slow ripening, extending the hang times of our fruit. This microclimate creates balanced, full-flavored grapes that tend to have relatively low sugar content yet full phenolic maturity and beautifully retained natural acidities.

Moraine Estate Naramata Bench Pinot Noir

Moraine is derived from the geological term for the glaciated white clay buffs that comprise the breathtaking Naramata Bench. Also known as “boulder clay“, Moraine is a deposit of clay which is formed beneath glaciers and ice-sheets during the Glacial Period in North America, specifically, in the Okanagan Valley as we know it today. As a result, these glaciated white clay cliffs comprise the wondrous Naramata Bench and inspire the winery’s land-formed name.  This is estate-grown pinot noir from their Sophia Vineyard.  Hand-picked and fermented in small 1-ton vats. Complex and layered with bright, tangy notes of raspberry, darker elements of black cherry and mulberry, and a subtle undercurrent of cedar and toast. Fine tannins balance this elegant, medium-bodied pinot noir.

With his Italian roots, Joe recognized the land’s potential and made a trip back to his home country to take cuttings of Vitis vinifera vines, bring them back to Canada and plant them in 1968. In 2004, BC entrepreneur, Curt Garland, purchased Hester Creek Estate Winery and made substantial investments to the vineyard and winemaking. Their Estate Vineyard, Lone Hand Ranch, is the home to the wine they call "FANDANGO". Spanish varietals, Albariño and Verdejo, typically grown in northwestern Spain and Portugal, were planted here in 2008. The southwestern slope of till sediments and stony soils of this vineyard above Naramata Road are optimal conditions for these aromatic whites with crisp acidity.
