We managed to get our hands on a VERY limited amount of Park Distillery's 2nd Rye Whisky Release. This is the first release to make it to our shop and comes from a single cask limited run of 300 bottles. Selected by Distiller Matt Hendricks and his team at Park Distillery in Banff, Alberta. This 100% Canadian Rye was filled into a half-sized cask with a #3 char on January 31st, 2017. It was aged for 42 months before being put into 375ml bottles at 43.4% ABV.

Forty Creek Heritage Edition

Made from a mashbill of corn, rye and barley, it is similar in style to the long lost Forty Creek Three Grain. It is finished in toasted rather than charred oak. We are only expecting a dozen bottles, so we are limiting them to 1 per customer.
Distiller's Tasting Note
Nose: fruity and rich with rye and ginger herbal notes below the surface.
Palate: noted of malted cereal accented with vanilla and cocoal, followed by hints of almond and coconut. It's creamy, yet balanced with spicy flares of pepper and ginger.
Finish: very long, with soft oak tannins and espresso notes.
Producer Description: "Forty Creek Heritage was built as a tribute to our first ever, most sought after release. Our Master Blender, Bill Ashburn, personally handpicked only the highest-quality barrels of corn, rye and barley whiskies, combining them into a smooth, yet complex liquid. We finished Heritage in toasted American Oak, instead of the traditional charred oak, pulling out more vanilla flavours and highlighting the bolder spices of the wood.
Masterson's 10 Year Straight Rye

As with other Rye WhiskEy bottled by Masterson's - this is actually a Rye WhisKY - originally distilled at Alberta Distillers right here in Calgary but then eventually sold and bottled by another company in the USA. This is a 10-year-old Rye finished in Hungarian Oak Casks.
Evan's Tasting Note:
Nose: Dill, pickle juice, dusty Rye grain, cloves, pine sap, lime zest, jujubes, fresh out of the garden carrots, mint leaves and other herbaceous notes with a hint of turpentine.
Palate: Juicy with mint, limes, black pepper, lemon juice, assorted jelly beans, pineapple, dill and eucalyptus.
Finish: Soft spice notes but it remains juicy and approachable in style.
Comments: The Hungarian Oak finish isn't just a gimmick - it does create a set of different nuances I didn't notice in the regular 10 year Masterson's Rye.
Orphan Barrel Entrapment

This is the 11th release in the Orphan barrel series, but the first to be made of Canadian whisky. It is from a mash of 97% corn and 3% malted barley. If you were ever wondering how much-malted barley you need to ferment a mash of mostly corn, now you know. The whisky is from Crown Royal's distillery in Gimli Manitoba. It was bottled at 41% after maturing 25 years in American oak.

Not content to just slap his name on wine, The Great One also has his own whisky label. This Canadian Whisky was made from a combination of Rye (both malted and unmalted) and Corn. It was finished in casks that once held Vidal Ice Wine that was bottled under Gretzky's wine label. Symmetry!
Bottled at 41.5%, which is silly since if they bottled it at 49.5% it would have been 99 proof. You missed that shot, Gretz!
