This 12 year old expression of Yoichi single malt from the northern island of Hokaido has a high proportion of sherry casks in the vatting. The whisky hs been bottled at 45% and is availble in Alberta in limited quantities!

Yoichi is Japan's 2nd oldest distillery, founded by Masataka Taketsuru in 1934. It is the only distillery in the world to continue to coal fire the stills. 

Producer Tasting Note: "The Yoichi 12 years incorporates a higher percentage of sherry casks, offering more aromatic complexity than its younger sibling.

The characteristic peat notes are still present, with both mature oak and delicate floral aromas widening the spectrum."

Tyrconnell 10 Year Port Finish

This whisky was named Blended Malt Whisky of the Year in 2010 by Whisky Magazine. Peppery and salty with prunes, dried orange, walnut and ginger. Available sporadically in very limited quantities.

Nikka's founder Masataka Taketsuru travelled to Scotland in 1918 to learn whisky making. He studied Organic Chemistry and worked for a number of Scottish distilleries. For a short while he and his Scottish wife settled in Campbeltown where he worked for Hazelburn distillery. After returning to Japan he helped Shinjiro Torrii establish Yamazaki. In 1934 he opened his first distillery, Yoichi on Hokkaido.

Nose: the 60% punches you in the nose at first, but it softens to dusty malt, almost corn-whisky like oils and vanilla extract; Palate: bigger mouthfeel than I expected and some sweet and bitter oak, with crisp vanila, notes of kirsch and fresh cut maple; Finish: long drying and sweet with more crisp toasted oak.
