Casey Jones is relatively new in our market, but for those with a love of history (especially as relates to whiskey, prohibition, and early distillation), a visit to the brand's website is well worthwhile. We tasted through a range of CJ products recently and greenlit all of 'em. This Kentucky Straight Bourbon is a high corn / low rye mash bill that drinks beyond the declared 2.3 years indicated on the bottle. 56%

A young and bold Kentucky Bourbon distilled in a square copper pot still. That's not a still type; it's legitimately the shape of the Casey Jones Distillery's pot still, built in homage to the highly mobile prohibition-era stills that the legendary Casey Jones was knocking out for the bootleggers all those years back. Lots of history here - which is fun, of course - but the spirit is bloody good, and that's what really matters. High corn / low rye mash bill. 52%

Leopold Bros Bonded Bourbon

Released at 5 years old, the Leopold Bros Bottled in Bond Bourbon is distilled from a mash of 64% Corn, 21% Malted Barley, and 15% Abruzzi Heritage Rye. It was first released in 2020.

Bottled at 50% ABV. As a Bonded Bourbon Whiskey, it has to adhere to the following rules as laid down in the Bottled In Bond Act of 1897:

• All whiskey in the bottle must be produced by one distillery and by one distiller over the course of one distillation season.
• The whiskey must be at least four years old.
• It must be bottled at least 100 proof / 50% ABV
• The whiskey must be aged in bonded warehouses under United States federal supervision.
• The label on the bottle has to state which distillery it comes from and also where it was bottled.

The Leopold Bros Distillery opened in 2014 and is located in Denver Colorado. The distillery makes whisky and other spirits from grains and fruit sourced as locally as possible - just about everything is grown in Colorado itself, including the Rye which is grown at Leopold Bros' own farm. One of the unique features of the distillery - at least by American standards - is a malting floor which is used to malt grains on site. They also use an on-site dunnage warehouse as opposed to the more typical Rickhouse with multiple floors for ageing.

Redwood Empire Grizzly Beast Bourbon

This is a 5-year-old bottled in bond Bourbon, 50%. Redwood Empire used a four-grain mash bill for this Bonded Bourbon, consisting of 66% Corn, 23% Rye, 7% Wheat, and 4% Barley.

Bottled at 50% ABV. As a Bonded Bourbon Whiskey, it has to adhere to the following rules as laid down in the Bottled In Bond Act of 1897:

• All whiskey in the bottle must be produced by one distillery and by one distiller over the course of one distillation season.
• The whiskey must be at least four years old.

The Russian River Valley might not be your first (or second, or tenth) guess at the location to house a whiskey distiller, but that is where Redwood Empire Distilling resides. The Graton, California distillery was established in 2015.

Redwood Empire Rocket Top Rye

The Rocket Top is bottled at 50% from a High Rye Mashbill. This Redwood Empire Bonded Rye is made from a four grain mash bill consisting of 57% Rye, 5% of both Wheat and Barley, and 3% Corn.

Hirsch Bourbon The Bivouac 50%

Distilled in Bardstown, Kentucky (likely by Bardstown Bourbon Company), The Bivouac from the revived Hirsch brand is a blended Bourbon comprised of two different mash bills. 5% of the liquid in this bottled is from 8 year old Bourbon with a = 72% Corn, 13% Rye, and 15% Malted Barley mash. The younger, remaining 95% is aged for under four years and has a mash bill of 74% Corn, 18% Rye, and 8% Malted Barley.  Bottled at 50%.

Basil Hayden Red Wine Cask

While not as robust and high alcohol as the Old Grand Dad Bottled in Bond, Basil Hayden is also distilled by Jim Beam and uses the same 63% Corn, 27% Rye, and 10% Malted Barley high-rye mashbill as OGD. The Red Wine Cask Finish is a limited release partially finished in California Red Wine Casks.
