A vatted (blended) malt from Johnnie Walker. Jim Murray awarded this 15-year-old Green Label a very impressive 95 points in his 2010 Whisky Bible! Gorgeous notes of dark chocolate, coffee and oak — and a great price — make it a standout. The cornerstone malt in the Green Label are provided by Caol Ila, Talisker, Cragganmore and Linkwood distilleries respectively. Bottled at 43% ABV.

This 57 year old "Blended Malt" is part of a range of whiskies released by Gordon & MacPhail to highlight what they are doing at The Cairn Distillery. The distillery's own whiskies won't be ready for some time, but in the interim they have created bottlings to show what the spirit might be like in 12, 18, 25, 30, 40, 57, and 70 years. The Cairn Distillery sits at 57 degrees north latitude-wise, hence the name CRN57 for these releases. 43.1%

""In 2008, Chichibu Distillery was opened by founder, Ichiro Akuto, and it was the first new distillery to open in Japan in 3 decades. Ichiro’s grandfather owned the famed Hanyu Distillery, which closed in 2000. Ichiro then took possession of all the whisky stocks left behind in the Hanyu distillery and used them in the blending production of the world famous Ichiro’s Malt Card Series. Chichibu whiskies are much in demand globally due to limited production and award winning quality. Ichiro Akuto is revered globally as a master craft distiller, producing some of Japan’s best whiskies today. This rare expression whisky is a marriage of single malts from Chichibu, Hanyu and Scottish distilleries that have been aged in various casks for undisclosed amount of years. Caol Ila 12 Year

The most overlooked of all the peated heavyweights, despite the fact that it out-produces all of them by a substantial margin, Caol Ila (pronounced 'cull-eela') is a not-so-hidden gem for malt lovers. It is a sister distillery to Lagavulin (and Port Ellen!) and produces whisky with the same level of phenols as Lag, though generally speaking Caol Ila is a tick more delicate. The distillery's general profile is usually fairly citrus-driven, with a strong maritime influence and clean herbal notes. The 12 year old is an icon, but if you ever get a chance to walk up the age-stated range into the 20s and 30s, do not pass up the opportunity.

Producer Tasting Note
Nose: Subdued, citric fruitiness; a whiff of bath oil and dentist's mouthwash. A fresh and appetising nose, with little or no trace of smoke.
Palate: Drinks well at natural strength; sweet start; pleasant, light fragrant smokiness and a lengthy finish.
Finish: Sweet smokiness in the lingering, slightly sour finish.
