Craig and Carla Hawkins are two of the most important, pioneering icons of South African wine. Their label, Testalonga, was born in the Swartland in 2008, at a time when the Swartland Revolution put the region on the map and proved it is much more than a land of cheap plonk. Winemakers like Adi Badenhorst, Eben Sadie, and Chris and Andrea Mullineux set the scene for true terroir-based winemaking, and then the young(er) guns like Craig, Carla, Johan Meyer of Mother Rock, and Jurgen Gouws of Intellego came along, pushing boundaries even further. They began playing with skin contact on their whites, earlier picking dates, lower sulphur levels, etc., in a way that their predecessors hadn’t.

The affable Pascal Marchand might be from Quebec, but his story is full-throttle French, and more specifically, deeply Burgundian. Over the past 45 years, he has built a resumé as good as anyone's in all of Burgundy, and even though Canadian, is considered today to be one of the originalists of what can be thought of as modern Burgundy. Starting in 1989 at the famed Comte Armand, he introduced organic farming, modernized the winery, and gained almost overnight acclaim for their now famous Pommard 'Clos des Epeneaux'. Following his tenure there, he pivoted to the Boisset family's Domaine de la Vougeraie, where until 2006, he converted their vast holdings into an organic and biodynamic treasure trove.
Finally, in 2011, along with partner Moray Tawse, another Canadian, he founded Domaine Marchand-Tawse, having purchased the old Maume cellars in Nuits St. Georges. Together, Marchand and Tawse have accumulated a staggering collection of vineyards in 68 different appellations up and down the Côte. This central region of the Douro Valley is one of the most historically significant areas for Port wine, recognized as the source of the finest Ports since the inception of the Port trade.
The four estates—Terra Feita, Junco, Casa Nova, and Eira Velha—are all located within the original 1756 demarcation and were awarded feitoria status, the highest classification for Port vineyards. The name Sentinels is inspired by the granite pillars, known as “marcos de feitoria”, which stand guard along the demarcation line that separates the highest quality Port areas, and this is where many of the Taylor Fladgate’s estates are situated. A total of 335 stone posts were placed between 1758 and 1761 to mark this prestigious area.
Each of these historic properties offers distinct characteristics in terms of altitude, orientation, sun, wind exposure, and mix of grape varietals. The Moniz family has been in Dão's Silgueiros area for generations. In the early 1990s, António Canto Moniz decided to dedicate himself to serious winegrowing, using his family's historic presses and lagares. Today, the estate is overseen by António’s son, Henrique. The Tinto blends 40% Touriga Nacional, 20% Alfrocheiro, 20% Tinta Roriz, 20% Jaen, from granite-rooted vines 20-40 years old, at 440m. This densely structured wine is only just approaching maturity. Juicy black fruits are nicely balanced with the firm tannins and black-pepper edge. The wine should be ready from 2023 onwards.
