Shiraz may be the regional hero, but Cabernet Sauvignon from the area can lay almost equal claim. Best’s Great Western 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is a fine example of the Great Western Regional style; supple tannins with dark cherry, cassis, confection and cinnamon spice. With small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, this vintage Cabernet is a delight to drink now, but will certainly gain more complexity over the years.

Château Marsyas Red 2015 is effectively a Bordeaux blend with some Syrah added.. On the nose, the Cabernet Sauvignon dominates while the Syrah delivers some black fruit notes. In this adventure, the two brothers are advised by French winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt, who took part in choosing the plots as well as the grape varieties, before supervising their vinification from the first vintage released in 2007. Château Marsyas spreads out over 55 hectares in the heart of the Bekaa (whose name it borrows from ancient Greek), an alluvial plateau at an altitude of 900 meters bordered by the mountains of Mount Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon. In these iron-rich soils, where limestone outcrops everywhere, the vines plunge deep into the soil in search of humidity, while benefiting from exceptional sunshine.

Marco “Barba”, grew up in Madonna di Lonigo, near Vicenza. He is the heart (and the face, if you check the label closely) of the Marcobarba project. Marco took an interest in organic and biodynamic farming from an early age. “Marcobarba” started as a social project carried on by Marco and friends he met working with another Venetian natural winemaker, Stefano Menti. Today the “Barbaboyz” take care of small plots of abandoned vineyards owned by some elderly widows, between the white sedimentary terrains of the Berici Hills and the dark and volcanic soils of Gambellara. From the grapes they grow with biodynamic practices, Marco produces about 40,000 bottles a year: a fizzy white wine, a still white and a red wine. Marco and the Barbaboyz’ winemaking and bottling is done in the Menti Giovanni Winery.
