Cristom Vineyards was established in 1992 to craft single-vineyard Pinot Noirs from distinctive, individual sites across their 240-acre estate. Today, those five single vineyards named for members of the founding Gerrie family—Eileen, Jessie, Louise, Marjorie, and Paul Gerrie—have earned an international reputation for their individuality, authenticity, consistency, and excellence. The Eileen vineyard is situated at their highest elevation on the original property rising to over 735 feet with commanding views of the Cascade Range to the east and the Coastal Range to the west. From where it sits at the crest of the Eola Hills, Eileen Vineyard may be the site at Cristom more defined by the cold, Pacific Ocean winds than any other vineyard we farm. After a precise soil composition study was completed, 5 wines were defined resulting from the 5 different soil profiles. Each wine is made in separate concrete eggs and then a final blend is determined. Using over 100-year-old vines helps to make this wine as delicious as it is. Lighter in style than your typical Malbec but still full of flavour and complexity.
In 2007 the brothers purchased their first 5 hectares of old vine Malbec vineyards. The original vineyard dates back to 1914. Over time they have built up to 25 hectares in total. With this dedication, they aspire to develop, along with other local producers who maintain their vineyards with pride, the stewardship to offset the encroaching urbanization.

It all started in the middle of the nineteenth century when French negociants visited the Rioja region to find alternative sources of quality grapes to transform into wine, since the phylloxera epidemic had decimated their vineyards. The founder, Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic student in the art of wine making, followed closely in their footsteps.
Don Rafael fell in love with the region and especially the area around Haro, the mythical capital of the Rioja Alta region. He observed that there was a magical combination of soil and climate that would offer the perfect environment for producing wine that would eventually become world famous. Around 1877 he began the design and construction of the complex that is today known as the López de Heredia bodega (winery), the oldest in Haro and one of the first three bodegas in the Rioja region.
