Along the steep, narrow valley that traces the northern Rhône, the appellations of Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph take their place among the great wines of France, and Domaine Faury is one of the region’s most artisanal producers. When Philippe Faury took over the domaine in 1979, the family was selling wine, peaches and cherries, and the bulk of their clientele was local. Over the years, Philippe expanded their holdings to over eleven hectares. The Saint-Jospeph sees 35 to 70% of whole clusters macerate in open concrete vats for 3 weeks. Gravity barreling occurs in large containers (foudres and demi-muids) for an aging period of 15 to 18 months. The wine is vinified with natural yeast and carried out by gravity, without fining or filtration.
Hedges Red Mountain Estate

Hedges opened in Washington's Red Mountain AVA in 1987 with a focus on Bordeaux varietals. The winery bears more than a passing resemblance to a Bordeaux chateau (one of the owners hails from France) and over the years they have converted all the vineyards over to biodynamic viticulture. It's a classic Bordeaux blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 9% Syrah, 6% Cabernet Franc 3% Malbec, and 1% Petit Verdot. It spends 18 months in 51% new oak, American (62%) and French oak (38%).

Domaine Gérard Julien is located in Comblachien, just south of Nuits Saint Georges and dates back to the late 19th century. As Gérard continued to purchase more holdings in the 70s and 80’s, he was able to grow the estate to roughly 10 hectares with parcels distributed in Nuits Villages, Nuits Saint Georges, and Echézeaux Grand Cru.
Étienne Julien, son of Gérard, assumed control of the estate in 2012 as winemaker. Being the fifth generation of the estate, he is introducing new methods to his winemaking while keeping the vision in line with previous generations, including organic viticulture. These wines exude another level of liveliness and energy. The 2016 vintage is still going strong and will continue to improve for another five-plus years.

Jaboulet Domaine Crozes Hermitage Rouge

Philippe Jaboulet and his son, Vincent, carry on long-established family winemaking traditions at Domaine Philippe & Vincent Jaboulet in Crozes-Hermitage. Located in the northern Rhône Valley about one mile south of Tain l’Hermitage, the domaine was founded in 2006 following the sale of Maison Paul Jaboulet Ainé, where Philippe managed the family’s vineyards and handled all grape purchasing.
After the sale, Philippe and Vincent retained about 32 acres of the family’s vineyards, including most notably a parcel of the original Thalabert vineyard, which is situated in the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. (Philippe and Vincent Jaboulet acquired another 37 acres to add to the newly formed domaine, including a small plot in Cornas-1.7 acres.) The parcel from the Thalabert vineyard that belonged to Paul Jaboulet Ainé was renamed Nouvelère, commemorating the ‘new era’. The domaine’s Nouvelère wine is produced from the vineyard’s oldest vines, up to 80 years old. (See below.)
The domaine owns other vineyard holdings in Crozes-Hermitage, where relatively younger vines yield full-bodied reds from the Syrah variety. These wines are aged in tanks and both small and large oak barrels; no new wood barrels are employed.) These reds are released two years after the vintage
