Jaboulet Ermitage Rouge

Grown on 1.3 hectares of vineyard, this very concentrated 100% Syrah showcases what the grape and the producers are capable of. It is vinified and aged in oak barrels for two years before bottlings. Ermitage is the original spelling of the appellation, a steep hill that is home to numerous parcels, typically on terraces. This wine is sourced from 40-year-old vines in the “Les Dionnières” lieu-dit (about 1ha). It is made entirely from estate-grown grapes, like all the wines produced by the estate. It offers a basket of complex flavours that include leather, coffee, blackcurrants, vanilla and minerals. It's drinking well now and will continue to improve for another 5 years or more.
Philippe and Vincent Jaboulet are a father & son duo that also happen to be 5th and 6th generation winemakers with a focus on Northern Rhone. They set up their own vineyards in 2006 following the sale of their family negociant business Domaine Jaboulet Aine in 2006.
Vinha da Urze Douro Red

The trio of Tinta Roriz (30% - also known as Tempranillo), Touriga Franca (45%) and Touriga Nacional (25%) go into this Portuguese red from the Quinta Da Urze vineyards owned by the Roboredo Madeira family. The fruit is destemmed, crushed gently and undergoes thermal shock followed by a period of maceration. Pre-fermentation takes place in a cold mill for about 12 to 24 hours. After this, the wine is transferred to fermentation tanks for a low maceration for 8 days at 22ºC. 40% of the wine is aged in French oak for 8 months.

As a farmer, Luigi Einaudi displayed intelligence and far-sightedness. When he used rooted grafts on American rootstock to combat phylloxera, he brought modern viticulture to the Langhe. He decided in 1915 to create a cellar to produce and bottle wine, rather than just selling the grapes. He at once began to buy vineyards that enjoyed a particular position, exposure and soil quality in order to produce the best wines. The seed for a career in wine was planted squarely in the Bourbon Whiskey country of Lexington, Kentucky. While waiting tables to put himself through school, Ken was exposed to fine wines from regions around the world. The passion became avocation when Ken left the Bluegrass State to attend enology and viticulture classes at UC Davis. Eight years were spent winemaking for Ventana Vineyards, Chalone and Talbott Vineyards in Monterey County on California’s central coast. Friends from the Willamette Valley piqued Ken’s interest in the region when they would visit, and a trip to the Dundee Hills in 1976 convinced him that this was where the finest Pinot noir in North America was being grown.
