Craig and Carla Hawkins are two of the most important, pioneering icons of South African wine. Their label, Testalonga, was born in the Swartland in 2008, at a time when the Swartland Revolution put the region on the map and proved it is much more than a land of cheap plonk. Winemakers like Adi Badenhorst, Eben Sadie, and Chris and Andrea Mullineux set the scene for true terroir-based winemaking, and then the young(er) guns like Craig, Carla, Johan Meyer of Mother Rock, and Jurgen Gouws of Intellego came along, pushing boundaries even further. They began playing with skin contact on their whites, earlier picking dates, lower sulphur levels, etc., in a way that their predecessors hadn’t.

Redstone Gamay

Morey Tawse, a financier by trade – is the vice president and co-founder of First National, the country’s largest non-bank mortgage lender- as well as a lifelong lover of wine, Moray Tawse could also be called a terroir collector. 

After realizing the potential of winemaking in Niagara, Moray purchased his first vineyard in 2001. In 2005 he opened Tawse, the winery that bears his family name. He then secured vineyards in his beloved Burgundy and his project with famed winemaker Pascal Marchand, Marchand Tawse was born. Redstone is the newest addition to his portfolio and his second project on the Escarpment. “When you get an opportunity to get a terroir where the wine’s great, you buy another vineyard! ”, he confesses. When the former Thomas and Vaughan property came up for sale in 2009, it was an opportunity he simply couldn’t pass up.

The vineyard, which is ideally suited to maturing late-ripening Bordeaux-varietals, was originally intended to supplement the Tawse portfolio. However, when the first wines were made in 2010, they showed such a different character and terroir signature that Moray decided that they deserved their own home. So the idea of Redstone was born.

Luneau Verger Muscadet

Domaine Luneau Papin is the leading producer of single-vineyard, terroir-driven, long-ageing Muscadet. Their bottles have graced the wine lists of the world’s best restaurants vintage after vintage (Paul Bocuse anyone?). Pierre-Marie Luneau is the 9th generation in his family to grow that mystical Nantais grape: Melon de Bourgogne. In 2008 he was joined by his wife Marie Chartier. Together they farm 35 hectares in the heart of Muscadet Sèvre et Maine. 

Luneau Papin, formerly known as Domaine Pierre de la Grange before Pierre Luneau married Monique Papin of Domaine Papin and combinedthe two estates, has been in existence since the early 18th century, growing Melon since day one. Benetakoa Winery was founded in 1985 by Carlos Martínez de Cañas in Villabuena de Álava. Viticulture has been a centuries-old tradition in their family, and for several generations, they have dedicated themselves to pampering and learning from the land and the vine. In 1997, they expanded their facilities and moved to a new winery built in the upper part of Villabuena. They preserved the tradition and the artisan concept that was incorporated into the first winery, and continued with innovation as the basis of their wines. Since 2014, Evening Land Vineyards has been under the aegis of Rajat Parr & Sashi Moorman, a vigneron tag-team loved for their work in California at Domaine de la Côte and Sandhi Wines. But Evening Land's story truly begins in 1980 when the MacDonald family planted the famed Seven Springs Vineyard in south-eastern Eola-Amity Hills, Willamette Valley. The MacDonald Family farmed and sold this magical fruit to the brightest names in Oregon winemaking for decades. It wasn’t until 2005 when Evening Land Vineyards was born that this esteemed vineyard became a monopole, so to speak. Evening Land leased the whole of this treasured vineyard from the MacDonald family outright that year and a star-studded team led by Dominique Lafon of Burgundy fame took the helm, transitioning leadership to Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr in 2014. 

Taylor Fladgate Historical - The Globe

This Taylor Fladgate Historical series is a collection of specially blended cask-aged Ports presented in exclusive bespoke bottles inspired by historic bottle moulds. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, the shape of the wine bottle was in continuous development. It gradually evolved from the squat globular form of early glass vessels, used to convey wine from the wine merchant’s cask to the consumer’s table, into the tall cylindrical shape of today’s bottles in which wine can be cellared and aged. The Historical Collection Limited Edition series represents different stages in this evolution. Taylor Fladgate launches a limited edition of a Reserve Tawny Port to pay homage to its long history of pioneering and passion.
