DuMol Eddies Patch Syrah
$132.99
Winemaker’s Notes: "Less overtly fruity than Jack Robert’s Run, slower to open and overall a very different expression of Syrah. This is another wine of site and soil rather than Californian sun-filled fruit – so ultimately a far more complex experience than 99% of domestic Syrah. The deep red, iron-rich, highly-eroded mountain soils bring a rarely-matched complexity to this wine, but one that typifies many of the world’s greatest red wine vineyards. We don’t fully understand the reason, but the high iron oxide content allows for very special red grapes, full of complex terroir signatures. The shallow, steep hillside soils, also high in silica/quartz, contribute admirable freshness to the wine, so that while it’s dense, deep and rich, it’s never clumsy or overbearing, and the moderate alcohol level (14.34%) is easily held in check. You can age this vintage for many years and it will always give pleasure. The balsamic reduction notes will become more prominent with age as the fresh fruit fades, but this is a beautifully constructed Syrah and one of our finest ever Eddie’s Patch offerings. In my mind on a par quality-wise with the gorgeous 2009.
Deep blueberry, blackberry and dark cherry fruit with bay laurel, pine needle, menthol and a resonant balsamic note. The aromas directly translate to flavors. Wintergreen complexity, charcoal and a strong volcanic iron quality. Dark core of rich, full fruit. Walnut sweetness with dried herb freshness. Weighty and concentrated but wonderfully energetic. Plum skin tanginess on the mouth filling finish. There’s long term aging potential here.
Complex, multi-layered wine with fine interplay between vintage-derived deep fruit core and vineyard signature soil-driven elements." Winery notes
Altolandon Organic Red
$34.99
Owner & winemaker, Rosalia Molina, produces these organic wines in one of Spain's highest-altitude wineries. Her mission is to make wines that express the typicity of DO Manchuela, and this includes the vineyards, the altitude and the varieties planted. The climate pushes the limits for grape growing because, at 1,100 metres above sea level issues like frost become a concern. The grapes tend to experience a large diurnal range that encourages even ripening and helps to retain natural acidity. Rosalia's vineyards are certified organic, she uses only natural fertilizers, promoting biodiversity by welcoming chickens, sheep and pigs from local farms to roam the vineyards freely. Grapes are hand-harvested and vinified as naturally as possible with native yeasts and little other intervention. The wines are then aged in clay amphora and some in French oak to give texture and complexity.
This organic red blend is made up predominantly of Syrah, with some Cabernet Franc and Garnacha, dense and layered. One to enjoy now or cellar for a while. It spends 24 months in French oak as well.Ripe notes of black berries, blueberries, a touch of minerality and an expressive note of black pepper. A great wine to pair with a juicy steak, tourtiere and/or roasted root vegetables. Vegan friendly!
Carm Douro Tinto
$22.99
Carm is part of the Roboredo Madeira winery group, (as are our Vinha da Urze wines), a company that has been producing wine and olive oil since the 17th century. The wine is vinified in Carm's Winery at Quinta das Marvalhas in Almendra, in the heart of Douro Superior. It's a blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional, the trio of red grapes that form the backbone of many Port wines. It's aged in both French and American oak barrels for eight months prior to bottling. Look for expressions of blackberries, mulberry, and black cherry followed by the seductive flavours of black figs and licorice. There's a hint of toasted oak on the palate.
Best`s Bin 0 Shiraz
$74.99
Best's Wines was established in 1866 by the pioneering Henry Best then sold to his neighbour Frederick Thomson in 1920. It's run by the Thomson family in the best tradition! Brooding spice and clove characters on the nose with red fruits nestled amongst subtle complexities and a touch of restrained oak. Great depth of flavor. Deep, rich with a long finish showing fine tannins.
Carm Douro Rose
$21.99
A Rose that makes us blush with pleasure! Just look at that gorgeous color. Vibrant summer fruit aromas. Persistent berry fruit flavors, good acidity, easy drinking and easy on the pocketbook! CARM stands for Casa Agricola Roboredo Madeira. It's a strictly family concern, having been in the same family since business began in the middle of the 17th century. It's quite a story of a family's dedication to producing the best from such dry, stony terrain. Grapes can excel in these conditions. Very affordable and good company. Keep it on hand for a weekday evening of easy sipping and relaxation.
Dominio de Tares Baltos Bierzo Mencia
$27.99
You may not have heard of the Mencia grape before, but the critics certainly have! Baltos, made from 100% Mencia, has collected a ton of awards over the years. Wine Spectator calls it "one of Spain's best reds," giving it 90 points. (It ranked 67 out of the magazine's 100 best wines.) So, it's definitely not an unknown grape. This one is made from 40-year-old dry-farmed vines, and shows hints of violets and minerals. Fresh, elegant, clean and delicious.
Best`s Great Western Chardonnay
$34.99
Founded in 1866, Bests' is a family-owned and operated winery with some of the oldest and rarest vines in the world. One of the great things about this Great Western Chard is the fact that the grapes come from some of the earliest plantings of Chardonnay in Australia. They are grown on a deep gravel hill with a west-facing slope and what this means is low yields and great intense flavors. After pressing, the wine spent 8 months in 30% new French oak barriques and achieved 30% malolactic fermentation with plenty of lees contact to encourage a rich, complex and textured wine. Aromas of flint and stone fruit are followed by rich and complex notes on the palate yet it remains elegant and subtle.
Lamadrid Malbec Gran Reserva
$34.99
Guillermo García Lamadrid began this project in 2004 by opening the door to wine growing in Argentina, from the lands of Agrelo in Luján de Cuyo, one of the first regions in Argentina to embrace Malbec. He partnered with winemaker Pablo Durigutti to produce a range of wines that run the gamut from good value to single vineyard examples from their oldest vineyard sites.
People love this wine! Deeply rooted in the mineralized soils of Agrelo, nourished by the pure water of the Andes Mountain Range, and embraced by the unique sun exposure of this corner of Argentina Lamadrid is a unique partnership. Guillermo Garcia Lamadrid and Hector Durigutti, master winemaker and general manager, have developed a close working relationship and partnership crucial for the success of the Lamadrid brand. Excellent nose of spice box, mineral, black cherry, and blueberry. Medium to full-bodied, it has excellent richness and depth, succulent fruit, and superior length, considering the price. Goes well with grilled meats and roasts.
Lamadrid Malbec Matilde
$79.99
Hector and Pablo Durigutti were born in Mendoza, the cradle of Argentinian wine and were raised together. Their childhood and their home were always connected to a sensorial world, with aromas, ingredients and flavours that, over time, motivated them to choose the path to become enologists. As adults, they would find these familiar memories and similar passions. In 2002 they dedicated their efforts to the creation of a small family winey. Today the brothers have evolved to form a new generation of winemakers, leading an evolutionary change in Argentina’s viticulture. Their range includes the value-driven Abeja wines and the upper-tier Las Compuertas offerings produced from the oldest vineyard sites.
Matilde is the flagship wine of this up-and-coming Argentine venture and precious little is produced. Sourced from the same estate vineyard with vines dating back to 1929, Matilde spends 24 months in new French oak. This loaded effort displays more obvious (but well-integrated) oak. This is an unctuous and silky red with a long finish. In the nose, aromas of vanilla, white chocolate, mocha, and tobacco combine with ripened fruit, blackcurrant, and plum. Food pairings? Big red meats!
