One of the best-kept secrets out of Piedmont is the winery G.D. Vajra. Located at 1300ft in elevation and being the highest winery in Barolo they are fortunate enough to have some of the latest ripening grapes in Barolo and also providing smaller berries with thicker skins. A lot of the vineyards were planted in 1947, but the winery itself was not started until 1972 and the first vintage was released in 1978.
"Aldo and Milena Vajra are among the quietest and most introspective of Piedmont’s top echelon growers. It is the wines that do the talking here, and they do that ever so eloquently," according to Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. And from the winemaker: "Ruby red, delicate and at times, transparent. In 1979 Hermann Weis from the Mosel region of Germany purchased the farm from the Moyer Family. Mr. Weis was a nurseryman and a winemaker in Leiwen. His winery, known globally today, is operated by his son Nik and family and it is called St. Urbans-hof. Mr. Weis brought his own Riesling vines to Ontario to show local growers that premium, vinifera vines could survive in our climate. Mr. Weis developed his own clone 21 and his plans were to grow and sell his Riesling vines all across North America. He planted 40 acres of his vines in 1979 at the Moyer farm to show his faith. To honour his new vineyard he called the old Moyer farm, St. Urban Vineyard. In 1980 their site became a licensed winery and our first bottled wine was from the 1983 vintage which is when they officially became Vineland Estates Winery. The winery is now owned by Mr. Fred DeGasperis and the DeGasperis Family Trust. A number of great Toronto families are part of that trust and are owners to this day.

Thomas Reynolds emigrated to Porto in 1824 and founded Thomas Reynolds & Son, dedicated to the export of Port wine, olive oil, wool, honey and cork to England. Around 1832, he moved to Alentejo, attracted by the cork business.
Herdade do Mouchão was one of dozens of estates where the Reynolds family produced cork, and it is likely that there were already vines on the estate by that time.
In 1850, Robert Hunter Reynolds (son of Thomas) assumed the management of the business, and in the early 1880’s his nephew William Reynolds played a crucial role in the fight against phylloxera as President of the National Commission against Phylloxera.

Chateau Coutet is effectively a golden triangle formed by the ocean, the river and the forest, with the Ciron running through it: that is where you will find the terroir. Château Coutet bears the stamp of the place, a one-of-a-kind liveliness and a keen-edged style which may explain the name of the château itself, derived from "couteau", the French word for knife. It was recognised as a Classified First Growth in the 1855 classification, but the lands around Barsac, among the coldest in the area, had already been planted with vines for centuries.
Charles Dufour Bistrotage Champagne

Based in Landreville in the Aube, Champagne vigneron Charles Dufour began his career in 2006 with a more conventional approach to Champagne, but not long after made the switch to organic viticulture (conversion of his six hectares was completed in 2010). Dufour’s are Champagnes of authenticity, reflecting, along with many other sensitive vignerons in his young cohort, the potential of the terroir of the Côte des Bars. Dufour only ever employs spontaneous ferments for vin clairs, and the wines are free of added sulfur. He’s also taken an interest in employing Pinot Blanc in his cuvées, with this variety figuring strongly in the domaine’s Bulles de Comptoir bottling. All primary ferments are conducted in old tanks and burgundy pièces with native yeast, no so2, and full malolactic completed. Dosage is very low; liqueur de tirage is a blend of Dufour’s own wine and cane sugar; the yeasts used in the secondary fermentation are derived from his own vineyards. None of his wines are ever fined or filtered.
Dufour has also expanded his Champagne range in recent years by making new wines from vineyards of his mother Françoise Martinot’s side of the family in a nearby village.
