"Tequila Ocho takes the exploration of terroir in tequila a giant step forward by producing batches of tequila from single fields (ranchos), much the way fine Burgundy wine is produced. For example, in the village of Vosne Romanee in Burgundy, wine is produced with the following appellations: Les Beaux Monts, La Montagne and Aux Brulees to name a few. Tequila Ocho has done the same thing by producing in Arandas the following names: El Carrizal, Las Pomez and Los Corrales," according to the distillery team. "Los Fresnos is between 2068m and 2078m above sea level with red oxide soil. It is located adjacent to La Alteña, the distillery where Ocho is made. This is West of Arandas, near the town of Jesus Maria. Los Fresnos is a large field with Ocho production using around 1/3 of its size."

The story of Bests' begins in 1866 when Henry Best purchased 30 hectares of land in the small town of Great Western, 230km Northwest of Melbourne in New South Wales. It was a property named Concongella, and the goal was to produce world-class wines that would compete with those from France. Fast forward to 1920 when Frederick P Thomson signs a contract of sale with Charles and Joseph Best (Henry Best’s sons), to purchase the Concongella Vineyard. The winery continued to evolve, planting whatever grapes were in fashion, all the while discovering the concept of terroir. By the turn of the century, Syrah is being touted as Australia's adopted grape child, and the varietal thrives over much of Australia's wine regions. In the 1980s the Syrah-based wines are often referred to as Hermitage but the French put an end to that outside of France. Hermitage became known as Shiraz., drawing the name from what is thought to be the grape's Persian origins in Shiraz, Iran. Meanwhile Bests' continues to evolve, acquiring more vineyards and establishing itself as one of Austalia's preeminent Shiraz producers. In 2012 their Bin 1 Shiraz won the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show, Australia's most prestigious wine award.

A terrific little treasure from Castilla y Leon. You may not remember the name of the grape, Prieto Picudo, but you will remember the delicious taste. Made from 100% old vine Prieto Picudo, this beauty is flying under the radar. With many of the same characteristics as Zinfandel, it opens with blackberry and cherry aromas. The taste is very smooth, quite fruit forward and very easy to drink. This tasty red will pair with spaghetti and meatballs or chicken parmigiana, or a backyard barbecue with friends. The finish is dry and long. Great wine, great price.

This one is made from 40-year-old dry-farmed vines, and shows hints of violets and minerals. Fresh, elegant, clean and delicious.
