Constantia Uitsig is located in what can be described as the "Cradle of winemaking" in the Cape and has a long history, being part of the first wine-producing estate in South Africa, dating back to the mid-1600s. Its unique position means that its vines benefit from the cool sea breezes, providing natural acidity and brilliant ageing ability, as well as Cape Town’s Mediterranean climate, with its rainy winters and long, dry summers. This position has made for the perfect grape growing conditions, with vines rooted in 200-million-year-old, well-composed, well-drained granite with a high clay content, ensuring excellent water retention. The wine features a complex nose that leads with tangerine and melon aromas underlined by a fresh minerality. Alyce was my Mom and she was the life of the party.
There is a section of vineyard right in the middle of the North slope where the soils are very heavy adobe clay resulting in the vines struggling to produce a crop more than 1 ton to the acre. It is a field blend of clone 777 and 115. This minimal crop yield tends to produce wines that are big, rich, "over the top" flavors; perfect for "Alyce". The South Slope begins at the highest elevation and the furthest South of all of the vineyards blocks. Soils are predominantly sandy loam and the vines are all from Burgundy clone 777. Dark cherry, tobacco, cedar, dried autumn leaves and iron lend this wine tons of character and depth.

In the year 2000, Georges Perrot established his own vineyards with land that he acquired as a result of his tenant farming or via sharecropping in the communes of Rasteau and Buisson, which represents an area of 15 hectares. With a helping hand from fate, he rented an old cellar for the 2002 harvest, and Domaine La Collière was born. In 2003 he built his modest little cellar in the Vaucluse in heart of the southern Rhone Valley. The wine is a blend of Vermentino (95%) and Clairette, fermented in stainless steel tanks followed by 8 months in barrique.

We are really excited about these wines, because one of the "Three Sisters", Rebecca Mikulic (nee Lawrence) used to work here at KWM. That and the wines are also delicious! Rebecca and her husband winemaker Matthew Mikulic grow grapes throughout the Okanagan, and have a winery on the Naramata Bench. This 100% Pinot Noir Rose was fermented in stainless steel tanks.

Meerendal Wine Estate dates back to 1702 and is home to some of the oldest plantings of Pinotage in the world, with some vines dating back to 1955. Pinotage is a genetic cross of Cinsault and Pinot Noir that has found a home in South Africa. The Meerendal Pinotage exhibits notes of juicy blackberries, dark cherries, cassis and dusty leather with a palate full of soft tannins, and a fruity and earthy finish.
