"Our label artist Emily Chappell has taken cues from our long-standing Ben Nevis label that features a chap atop Ben Nevis (mountain), looking at Ben Nevis (distillery), drinking Ben Nevis (whisky) and holding Ben Nevis (bottle, featuring the scene again on its label). Here, it’s just the mountain itself in a glass, raised in (Ben’s?) hand for a 10th birthday “cheers”"

1996 Ben Nevis has a legendary reputation, and it is becoming increasingly scarce. This 25 year old, from a Refill Butt, has been bottled at 53%. It is described as being very distillate driven.

"This is a hyper-distillate driven, almost ideologically 'refill' profile Ben Nevis 1996. You have been warned! However, for those of you who also enjoy this extremely pure, naked and invigorating style of highland malt whisky - you shall find yourself contorted with satisfaction. For this edition, the Sponge interviews his older self about his successes, failures and unrequited vengeances. You'll have to wait until next year, when we bottle the other half of this cask, to find out what his answers are... The first half of this stark-naked refill butt has been bottled reduced to 53% to bring out a slightly fruitier style on the palate. Next year we will likely do the rest at cask strength. If civilisation remains moderately intact. Stay tuned..."

"This year’s Spring edition of Equinox & Solstice is a single 2012 refill hogshead of 10 year old Ben Nevis Highland Single Malt. As always with this series, we bottled it at our favourite dramming strength of 48.5%. It’s a typical refill matured, youthful example of Ben Nevis, with an oily mouthfeel, lots of waxy flavours and natural barley sweetness in the back palate. A simple, fresh, highly pleasurable and adaptable dram, perfect for springtime sipping. This year’s series features a set of wonderful original artworks by Skye based artist Ellis O’Connor."

Note: Nikka's own website notes that this bottle does not meet the criteria to be called a Japanese Whisky. The good news is that might mean it also contains Ben Nevis Single Malt, as the Ben Nevis Distillery is also owned by Nikka.
Nikka's venerated from the Barrel has been a staple of our whisky shelves for years and will hopefully remain so. This creation from Nikka is a blend of grain and malt from multiple distilleries owned by the company. It is always bottled at 51.4% ABV after the components are married in refill casks for up to half a year to marry together and become a cohesive whole.
