The 2nd Edition in The Signature Series from Arran, which is planned to span four releases in total. Barrel Bonfire showcases and embraces the Lochranza Distillery's batches of peated spirit. The 42ppm malt was distilled in and filled into ex-Bourbon Barrels in 2012. It was transferred into ex-Koval Distillery quarter casks that previously matured Bourbon in September of 2018. The result was bottled in early 2024 at 50% ABV.
Producer Description
"Over the course of the secondary maturation, the intensity of the heavily peated whisky has taken on an even more complex and full-bodied character. The smaller the size of cask, the greater the surface contact area between the wood and the spirit, effectively creating an environment for ‘express’ maturation. The resulting whisky has the benefit of more intense flavours which add depth and greater nuance to the final dram. Smokier notes mingle with the well-loved charred citrus and sweet vanilla spices of Arran Single Malt, evoking a bonfire made from barrel staves."
Arran Machrie Moor Cask Strength

Machrie Moor is the name Arran gives to peated single malt whiskies from their distillery. The Machrie Moor Cask Strength is bottled at 58.2%. It used to have batch numbers, but given that it is now a part of the permanent Arran range they have phased those out. The barley is peated for 20ppm, which is a little lower than Bowmore on Islay.
Producer Tasting Note
Nose: Citrus notes with a background of peat and a puff of smoke immediately apparent.
Palate: A robust dram with the typical orchard fruits of Arran coming to the fore over a layer of toasted brioche and red berries.
Finish: Long lasting, creamy vanilla and coconut notes from the Bourbon cask.

More About Arran Machrie Moor
On the west coast of the Isle of Arran lies a windswept and mystical peat bog called Machrie Moor. Bronze Age stone circles and standing stones are strewn across its barren, undulating terrain. Producer Note: "Corriecravie is a hamlet just northwest of the village of Lagg that has its own secrets and stories to tell. This undulating terrain was home to some of the illicit stills that produced the infamous 'Arran water' in the days of early distilling on the island. And just near the village, there is the Torr a' Chaisteil Dun - a fort from the later Iron Age about 2000 years ago, locally known as 'Castle Hill.' With its sweeping views of the southern coastline of the island, Corriecravie is a place of beauty and intrigue that captures the essence of Arran."
"Coming to market shortly after the Kilmory, the Corriecravie Edition offers a unique twist on the Lagg Distillery spirit. After initially being matured in Bourbon barrels, this expression is finished for around six months in Oloroso sherry hogsheads sourced directly from producer Miguel Martin in Jerez. It is then bottled at 55% Vol, once again without chill filtration and with no added colouring. The result is a whisky that showcases a sweeter smoke and rich fruit notes."

The red wine casks used in this bottling were previously used to mature wine from the wine-producing region along the Duero River, in northern Spain, before they arrived with us in Lochranza. This rich, ruby amber coloured whisky is a Premium 12 year old unpeated example of Arran Single Malt.
"The Duero Discovery was initially matured for 6 years in first and second fill bourbon barrels and then transferred into first fill Spanish red wine casks and matured in our dunnage warehouse number 4 under the watchful eye of Distillery Manager Stewart Bowman for a further 6 years. Evan’s Tasting Note
Nose: Fresh out of the oven biscuits, pear compote, apple strudel, ripe banana, whipped cream with a dash of vanilla, elderflower, light dunnage notes and a touch of balsa wood and eucalyptus,
Palate: Smooth and creamy with a dash of spice. Shortbread, candied ginger, soft jujubes, lemonade and french toast with honey drizzled on top plus a touch of cinnamon powder.
Finish: Short, but sweet with just a touch of salt and creamy dannin to slowly dry the mouth and leave it ready for more. Possibly much more.
Comment: This is likely young as there are not a lot of prominent wood notes, but man is it ever balanced. It is not overly complex, but it sure is well put together and very drinkable.
