The Heartland story began in the late 1990’s when winemaker Ben Glaetzer (of Amon Ra fame) became excited about the outstanding quality of fruit being grown in some of South Australia’s lesser-known regions, in particular Langhorne Creek. Together with industry veterans Scott Collett, Grant Tilbrook and more recently, Nick Keukenmeester, they grew Heartland into an award-winning winery. It offers blackcurrant and berry fruits wrapped in a neat parcel of dried herbs, and a hint of eucalyptus. A touch firmish in the mouth, but the finish is long and seemingly endless.

Ripasso wine is made using an ancient winemaking technique called "ripasso." (Some call it the poor man's Amarone!) The young Valpolicella wine is fermented with the unpressed but drained skins and lees left over from making Amarone. This adds flavour and intensity, though Ripasso normally has a lighter taste than Amarone wines, which makes it easier to combine with food, and is often less expensive. Fruity, well-balanced and very well structured. Best food matches are: red meat, game and cheeses.

This winery begins with a tale of two brothers - Walter and Antonio Mastroberardino -who parted ways, with Antonio acquiring the winery and Walter acquiring the vineyards (renamed as Terradora). The Terredora di Paolo estate is located on the hills of Irpinia surrounding the valleys of the Sabato and Calore rivers. With about 180 hectares of vineyards, they rank among the most prestigious producers in Southern Italy. The South of Italy is one of the most interesting wine areas in the country and Campania, and especially the Irpinia region, produces wines from native grape varieties such as Aglianico, Fiano, Greco, Piedirosso and Falanghina, all of which are brimming with personality. There's not a lot of Chardonnay planted in Tuscany, being a French transplant and all, but this example from one of our favourite Tuscan producers makes you wonder why they don't plant more. While this organic wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation, it's kept on the lees for an extended period for added complexity. Expect a lively and fresh white wine that can pair with goat cheese, arugula pizza, salads, or all on its own on a summer day when you need a lift!

The Pita family has a long history in Spain's Rueda region, a DO dedicated solely to white wine. 2010 Vintage. A grower-producer in the heart of Chigny-les-Rose, Giles Dumangin has champagne coursing through his veins. Dating back to the 1650s, the Dumangins have always worked with the vines of Champagne, but it wasn't until 1890 when Hippolyte Dumangin created Champagne Dumangin in the 1er Cru vineyards of Chigny-les-Roses. Five generations later, Champagne Dumangin is producing an array of champagnes, from their classic, feminine style to their newer, high-end cuvees. Their Vintage Cuvee is a blend of Chardonnay (54%) and Pinot Noir (46%), and with 9 years en tirage (on the yeast lees), the wine shows beautiful and elegant complexity. Expect notes of brioche, grilled almonds, blossom and lemon drops, with a bright acidity that extends the finish. Pair with fresh seafood, or simply enjoy as an aperitif. 2010 was a challenging vintage for the region, but Dumangin did some aggressive sorting and managed to deliver a lovely vintage wine.

The Champagnes from father-daughter duo Arnaud & Mathilde Margaine are a KWM exclusive, and they are exceptional. With vineyards based in Montagne de Reims, they specialize in Chardonnay (90%) although they also have a small plot of Pinot Noir. This small estate (7 hectares) was started by Arnaud's father (Bernard) in the 1950s and is organically farmed. The vines average 35 years of age and the Chardonnay is produced from a clone unique to the area.
