A small handful of casks were selected from Cotswolds founder Daniel Szor's personal favorites. 'Uniquely active casks' were intentially targeted, to ensure a rich and expressive single malt. These were STR (shaved, toasted, recharred) American red wine casks which, as we can all agree, is the only way to use wine casks for maturing whisky.

Scarabus is a new single malt from Hunter Laing, the owners of the new Ardnahoe Distillery. The whisky is sourced from an undisclosed Islay distillery, as it will be years until Ardnahoe's whisky comes of age. Launched in May on Islay at Feis Isle 2019. The name of the whisky can be traced back to the 13th century, and means "A rocky place" in Norse. Bottled at 46% without colouring or chill-filtering. Tastes like peated Bunnahabhain.

Think of this as a reduced strength version of the Solist Bourbon. One other key difference, this is bottled not as a single cask, but rather in batches. 46%.

It is incredibly smooth with a soft sweetness, losing the harshness and the alcohol edge and lingering over those unique flavours. Nose: Clean with fresh tropical fruitiness and pleasant vanilla, coconut and spices. Imagine being soothed by that comfortable sea breeze with a calming and refreshing effect. This malt can do that for you after a hectic day at the office.
Palate: Soft, well-balanced natural sweetness, vanilla and oak spices, round and complex with silky smoothness.

Part of the new core range from Balblair Distillery, which focuses on age statement rather than vintages. Bottled at 46% after maturing in ex-Bourbon and finishing in First Fill ex-Sherry Seasoned Spanish Oak Butts. Bottled at 46%, unchillfiltred with no colouring added.
Evan’s Tasting Note
Nose: Apple turnover, honey glazed donuts, pears, Mounds bars, fresh coffee beans, and Ovaltine.
Palate: Cinnamon cake doughnuts, raisin and nut shortbread cookies, apples and pears, more honey, lemon-ginger tea, and Werther’s Originals.
Finish: A touch of spice plus soft apples, honey and toffee and a touch of shortbread.
Comment: This is a very well put together 18 Year Single Malt Scotch. Many will miss the vintage releases of Balblair, but having a bottle like this to come back to time and time again might just be worth the tradeoff.
Producer Tasting Note
Aroma: Rich toffee and baked pears shine bright against an elegant backdrop of new leather.
Palate: A masterful balance of juicy apricots, seasoned oak and vanilla custard.
Finish: Long and warming with chords of fresh spices and raisins.
