The 8th release in Glenmorangie's Bond House No,1 range, was built around a parcel of whisky which was filled into virgin oak by Dr. Bill Lumsden in 1998, shortly after he took over as director of whisky creation. The virgin oak matured whisky was married with classic whiskies from ex-Bourbon and Sherry casks. The whisky has been bottled at 43% and 23 years of age.

"The year this whisky was distilled, there was a fresh air of enthusiasm at the Distillery. Having joined Glenmorangie some years before, Dr Bill Lumsden had just taken charge of all Glenmorangie’s whisky creation. And he was bursting with ideas for evermore delicious whiskies.
"Dr Bill was particularly eager to explore the wonders new charred oak barrels might bring to Glenmorangie’s soft, fruity spirit. And so he earmarked a handful of carefully crafted casks, tailormade to enrich the Distillery’s single malt. By charring the virgin wood of these bespoke casks for the first time, Dr Bill hoped to create a striking style of single malt, intense in colour and spice.

Bottled from a marriage of 5 sherry butts and bottled at a precariously low cask strength of 40.8%. Believed to be Bunnahabhain, the whisky scored 90pts from Whisky Fun in 2014, but in 2019 he upped his score to 91pts, which I still feel is low. This is old school tropical whisky!

"Matured in five sherry butts, this expression was distilled in 1968 and bottled at a cask strength of 40.8%. Port Askaig 45 Year Old is an old Islay style that is almost completely lost today. Fruit driven, with next to no smoke and with an abundance of tropical fruits such as mangoes and papayas, this is a very rare whisky and one to be savoured. "

It has been a hot minute since we have gotten anything older than the venerable 12-year-old when it comes to official bottlings of Tobermory. The 21 is here now though - at least for a minute or two! Bottled at 46.3% ABV, the whisky was aged in Oloroso sherry casks for its final four or five years of maturation.

"Joining our award winning 12 year old in the unpeated Tobermory whisky core range, this 21 year old is small batch produced at our distillery on the Isle of Mull. Distilled into whisky refill cask on the 16th of December 1999, this spirit was then transferred into Oloroso sherry casks on the 26th of February, 2015. The result is a beautifully sweet and vibrant dram. Like all our whiskies, this is non-chillfiltered and natural colour, with an abv of 46.3%, mirroring our other core range expressions."

Anyhow, this single malt from Raasay Distillery was fully matured in Colombian Oak before being bottled at 50.7%. If you are looking to see how Columbian oak changes a whisky versus the more typical French, Spanish, or American oak casks, now is your chance!
