"The barley harvest for this 2013 vintage was raised on our home shores in 2012 by seven of our Islay farming partners. Hunter Jackson at Cruach, Ian McKerrell at Island farm, Raymond Fletcher at Dunlossit estate, Donald and Andrew Jones at Coull, Mark French at Rockside, Alastair Torrance at Mulindry and Raymond Stewart at Sunderland all undertook the risk of growing in challenging conditions to deliver the barley for this Scotch whisky with unparalleled provenance. This Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2013 single malt has been matured in ex-American and ex-wine casks hailing from the Pessac-Leognan region of France. Heavily peated and malted to 40 PPM, this eight-year-old single malt pays homage to its island home. With redberry fruits, toasted oak notes and hints of coffee and chocolate, it offers a dramatic, smoky finish."

Unquestionably one of the most exciting and challenging whiskies on the market, Port Charlotte commands attention in all its guises. In fact, there's a part of me that wishes Bruichladdich would ditch the other ranges and produce Port Charlotte full time, but I suppose variety is also a good thing. Unfortunately, heavy demand on the distillery's stocks means that it is exceedingly rare to see PC beyond 10 years of age. Thankfully we have indie bottlers like Rest & Be Thankful, who are the only ones giving us higher age statement Port Charlotte expressions. This single cask (#1577) appears to be full term maturation in an ex-wine hogshead. At cask strength, this should be a real rollercoaster of flavours. Look for sweetness, big smoke, and a whole lot of farmyard in a bottle.

Single cask, cask strength, Port Charlotte. Hell yeah. After nearly two decades in an ex-wine hogshead, our friends at Rest & Be Thankful were able to get just 222 bottles of this one. Expect the wine to deliver some sweet, sour, and savoury notes to Port Charlotte's smoky, coastal, and farmy stylings. We're itching to try this one, because let's face it...19 year old Port Charlotte is as rare as hen's teeth.

These casks, originally ex-bourbon casks granted to HaAretz by M&H, were in-turn used for the maturation of a special DoppelBock (double-bock) beer, characterized by a sweet aroma and a palate rich in chocolate and toasted malt notes. After 4-6 months, the beer was extracted and the casks returned to M&H, re-filled and matured to perfection for 3 years. One of the casks in the edition spent a full year of its maturation in the M&H Dead Sea Project, enhancing its flavor to the maximum."

These casks, originally ex-bourbon casks granted to Jems by M&H, were in-turn used for the maturation of the Jems 8.8 – a strong Belgian ale style beer – which is characterized by fruity aromas, notes of caramel and pleasant bitterness. After 4-6 months, the beer was extracted and the casks returned to M&H, re-filled and matured to perfection for 3 years."

Milk & Honey, or M&H to their buds, should be on everyone's radar by now. Their range is sprawling, the team has an eye to innovation, and maybe most importantly...they know how to handle casks that have previously held wine (including port and sherry). This is unquestionably the influence of the late Dr. Jim Swan, whose legacy will forever be secure based on the STR process alone. But none of that matters unless you have good spirit. Milk & Honey has good spirit.
The Apex range consists of the more experimental end of the M&H portfolio, and the single cask range with the Apex range takes that a step further in terms of oomph and intensity. This single PX Sherry Butt (#2018-0900) yielded just 544 bottles at the ripe ol' age of 3. In this sort of climate, you don't need a lot of years to reach a state of complexity.

The inaugural release of whisky from the Isle of Harris Distillery is here. This lightly peated (12-15 ppm) single malt was matured at least 5 years in a mix of First Fill ex-Bourbon casks as well as Oloroso and Fino Shery Butts. It is married for at least 12 weeks in small batches before bottling at 46%. We are expecting a mix of Batch 4 and 5, of the 8 batches of inaugural release, which the distillery has bottled. Please note we have no control over which batch we receive, and we won't be differentiating; they are to be treated as the same product!

"This 2000 Ardmore is a great medley of farmy, earthy, smoky and sherry notes. We don’t normally go for whiskies that have been finished or re-racked. However, in this instance, the quality and richness of the sherry influence married so well with the fat, lightly peaty Ardmore distillate character that we couldn’t resist this lovely dark and gooey concoction. Bottled at natural cask strength, the finish is long and going towards tar resins, wood oils, mineral oil, strop leather and sooty waxes."
