La Gerla Brunello Angeli Riserva

This Brunello gli Angeli (Riserva) is made in select years, this comes entirely from a one hectare parcel of old vines from the original Biondi-Santi site, located between 270 and 320 meters above sea level. This hillside vineyard occupies a privileged position at the estate and consistently offers beautiful and healthy fruit. The wine is kept for 4 years in 50 hectoliter Slavonian oak casks and kept for an additional year in bottle before being released.
Fattoria La Gerla, named for the large, old-fashioned, conical baskets that grape-harvesters used to carry on their backs, was founded in 1976 by the late Sergio Rossi. Originally from Milan, Mr. Rossi purchased the property in 1975 from Tedina Biondi-Santi, the daughter of Tancredi Biondi-Santi, who had inherited the property after her father’s passing. The purchase of what was then called the Podere Colombaio Santi included an ancient farmhouse and 6.5 hectare of vineyards. Mr. Rossi, who by then had been managing the Altesino-Caparzo estate for several years, renamed the property La Gerla and set about restoring the estate and replanting the vines using selection massale. His first vintage was 1976, making La Gerla one of the first 35 bottlers of Brunello di Montalcino; these days, there are 280.
Today, La Gerla consists of 11.5 hectares, divided between the original 6.5 hectare vineyard in Canalicchio (Montalcino) and an additional 5 hectares in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, where Mr. Rossi was presciently the first to plant vines in earnest. The estate, now run by vineyard manager/director Alberto Passeri and winemaker Vittorio Fiore, makes five wines, all made entirely from Sangiovese Grosso, the only grape planted on the property.

Alberto Siegel Lubbe was a German architect, born in 1870. He built some of the most important and traditional buildings in Santiago from the 20th century, including the Reserva Federal de Chile building. His son Alberto Siegel Dauelsberg was a winegrower in charge of well-known vineyards. Later he studied agronomy and acquired experience in some wine cellars in Germany. In the Colchagua Valley, for more than 30 years, Alberto Siegel Dauelsberg planted the first vineyards, now known as Viña Siegel. Viña Siegel has more than 700 hectares planted with vineyards distributed in seven regions, strategically located at the foothills of The Andes.
Cosimo Taurino Salice Salentino Riserva

A blend of Negroamaro (80%) and Malvasia Nera, picked from vines 15 to 20 years old. The wine spends between four and six months maturing in French oak prior to bottling. Close to ten years on since the grapes were picked, the wine is currently showing wonderful lavender, cherry and raspberry notes along with integrated acidity and minerality. Getting a decade-old wine that drinks this well at this price is impressive and as such it remains one of the great bargains in Italy's vast wine realm. It would pair nicely with lasagna or roast chicken.

Cantina Cosimo Taurino was founded in 1970 by the legendary Apulian producer, Cosimo Taurino. He was a pioneer of Negroamaro, and of the Apulian wine industry, changing its reputation of the 'not so great southern region that only produces bulk grapes for the north' to a region known for its high-quality red and rosé wines. These casks, originally ex-bourbon casks granted to HaAretz by M&H, were in-turn used for the maturation of a special DoppelBock (double-bock) beer, characterized by a sweet aroma and a palate rich in chocolate and toasted malt notes. After 4-6 months, the beer was extracted and the casks returned to M&H, re-filled and matured to perfection for 3 years. One of the casks in the edition spent a full year of its maturation in the M&H Dead Sea Project, enhancing its flavor to the maximum."
