"This is a hyper-distillate driven, almost ideologically 'refill' profile Ben Nevis 1996. You have been warned! However, for those of you who also enjoy this extremely pure, naked and invigorating style of highland malt whisky - you shall find yourself contorted with satisfaction. For this edition, the Sponge interviews his older self about his successes, failures and unrequited vengeances. You'll have to wait until next year, when we bottle the other half of this cask, to find out what his answers are... The first half of this stark-naked refill butt has been bottled reduced to 53% to bring out a slightly fruitier style on the palate. "Whisky Sponge Edition No.61 is a single refill barrel of 1990 Islay Single Malt. Featuring a slightly more thoughtful label themed around memory, family and the future, this is probably as close as we'll get to bottling named whisky from 'that' particular southern Islay distillery. We opted to bottle this cask at natural cask strength as we felt it was just perfect as it came from the wood. Wonderfully fresh, coastal and peaty with tang of green and exotic fruits in the mix that hark back to a slightly older style example of this great Islay make."

Distilled at the Loch Lomond Distillery, this 29 year old, Old Rhosdhu, was matured in a Refill Hogsheads before bottling at 57.1%.

Producer Note

"Step into the petrified brain of the Sponge, from which only Old Rhosdhu can grow... Or in this case, specifically, a 1993 refill hogshead of Old Rhosdhu, distilled at Loch Lomond distillery in their famously confusing still room. It was aged for 29 years (almost 30 dammit!) and bottled with around 2 degrees reduction to 57.1% (100° proof in Brexlish). We deliberately did this because it made everything just that bit more fruity and exotic, and as you very well know, Old Rhosdhu is all about weird, pulpy, overripe, gungy, funky exotic fruits all smooshed up into a slurry and aged in a damp hessian sack with a fistful of mottled old thruppeny bits. The kind of fruits you wouldn't dream of putting anywhere near your mouth in real, physical life, but in whisky form are actually scrumdiddlyumptious. Anyway, we sent a LOT of emails to make this whisky get into glass bottles and eventually into a storage location from which we can facilitate its dispatch to YOU, our noble and coveted consumer. As such we hope you enjoy this luscious fluid. Please buy generously."

"Every so often we try some casks and think ‘we just absolutely have to bottle this!’. This 2005 Ledaig was one such occasion. Comprised of two 2nd fill sherry butts of 2005 Lediag that were clearly still very active and had matured in warehouse conditions which had delivered a highly concentrative maturation profile resulting in very low levels of whisky remaining in cask, at naturally very high strengths. The resulting whisky displayed such an intense and pure expression of sherry and peat we were instantly reminded of some of the great 1972 Ledaigs from sherry casks."

"This whisky comes from a major distillery, and that's all you need to know dammit! Having said that, we can tell you that this whisky was distilled in 2003 from an unusual batch of very lightly peated malt, matured in a refill hogshead for 19 years and then bottled, under our instruction, at natural cask strength. It is delicious and outrageously top secret! Please do not attempt to decipher the clues on the label to determine what distillery this whisky is from, they have been set to 'Dan Brown novel' level of impenetrability, you would only embarrass yourself. Please immediately purchase this bottle and destroy all evidence with your face hole!"
