Tasting Note From Angus @Whiskyfun.com

90pts Angus Whisky Fun: “Colour: white wine. Nose: more mineral and towards things like sunflower oil, toasted seeds, cereals, yellow wildflowers, pollens, honeys, dried mint, buttered toast and olive oil. Fragrant, gentle and very pleasant. Various light and fresh herbal notes such as chopped parsley, marjoram and chives. A very light background note of hessian, mineral oil and beeswax as well. Rather sophisticated and charming - quite out of character for things from 1985. Mouth: olive oil, yellow flowers, chestnuts, sunflower seeds, white bread, asparagus, black pepper, lime zest, gooseberry and lychee. Wee hints of cough medicine and gentian root, then slightly salty liquorice and fresh butter. Finish: good length, lemony, slightly yeasty, sooty, peppery and nicely drying. Comments: The ying to the other 85’s yang. A tad drier and more autolytic and mineral overall but still superbly drinkable and of equal quality. Very happy with these two, not often you find good 85s. SGP: 561 - 90 points.”

Glenfarclas Family Cask 1980 Winter 2018

$1,324.99

Know anyone turning 40 in 2020, this would make a great gift, and 1980 vintages are increasingly hard to find. Matured 38 years in a Refill Hogshead, this Winter 2018 Family Cask release has been bottled at the perilously low cask strength of 43.3% from cask No. 1916. No tasting notes or reviews on this one, but we expect it is light and very tropical... right in Andrew's wheelhouse. It's sister cask scored 89pts with the guys at Whisky Fun.

Producer Tasting Note

Nose: Exceptionally herbal, fresh, littoral and pelagic.

Palate: Immediately mouth puckeringly salted, before warming spices and a certain dry oakiness appears ahead of the ash.

Finish: Long and spicy, cough drop style, with a hint of tar and a drift of smoke.

Benromach Heritage 40 Year

$1,224.99

The Benromach Heritage 40 Year has been released to replace the Benromach 35 Year. From the same parcel of 1970s stocks as the 35, the 40 is composed of whiskies matured in ex-Bourbon Hogsheads and ex-Sherry casks. Bottled at 43%.

Producer Tasting Note & Description

"At Benromach we handcraft our single malt Scotch whisky the time-honoured way and make it slowly, by sight, by sound, by touch, as it was made many years ago. Our small team of distillers rely entirely on their senses and expertise to craft Benromach using traditional methods at every stage.

Benromach 40 Years Old is the result of four decades of careful maturation in both American hogsheads and ex Sherry casks. The marriage of these casks has combined to create a single malt of exceptional depth, complexity and balance.

Benromach 40 Years Old has a golden amber hue with sweet sherry, red apple and butterscotch aromas leading to mellow spices and a hint of creamy white
chocolate. Aromatic pear and ripe banana provide a sweet backdrop to a spicy ginger note. Smooth on the palate, cracked black pepper is initially followed by dried tobacco, Seville orange and soft oak tannins, mingling with subtle liquorice before a long, dry and spicy finish."

PIRATE SHIP IN A STORM

This 8 year old from Speyside was matured in a 2nd fill Oloroso butt and comes in at 68.2%.

Flavour profile:  Deep, rich & dried fruits.

Outturn:  567 bottles.

Panel's tasting note:  "Barrels of rich fruits and sweet spice rolled from the glass like a shipment of rum and raisin ice cream on a storm-torn pirate ship. Nutmeg and cloves united with Brazil nuts, dates and prune juice to create a succulent storm that rained down a torrent of mulled wine and onion gravy. Then fudge, butterscotch and banana bread delivered rich and sweet flavours that cascaded into coffee, orange and truffle oil.

With water, pine forests appeared with almonds and walnuts that sweetened into marzipan. Burnt notes of soft brown sugar and singed sultanas married with calvados before ginger and blackcurrants appeared. Finally, maple syrup balanced a finish that was dominated by pumpkin seeds, bitter chocolate and dry tree bark."

SPELLBINDINGLY SUBLIME

PLEASE NOTE SMWS CANADA HAS ASKED ALL STORES TO ENSURE THAT THIS WHISKY IS LIMITED TO 1 BOTTLE PER CUSTOMER, AND IS COORDINATING WITH ALL 4 SHOPS! - If you have not already bought one this whisky is open for sale!

The first release from this Taiwanese distillery for SMWS Canada, it is a no-age-statement whisky in keeping with other releases from this distillery. From a 1st fill STR barrique, it comes in at 58.3%.

Flavour profile:  Spicy & sweet.

Outturn:  181 bottles.

Panel's tasting note:  "The nose is like sinking into a honeypot full of cloves and allspice. Inside there’s also freshly eviscerated vanilla pods, quince jelly, plum wine, pear tarte tatin and many tropical fruit syrups. In time it becomes wonderfully mentholated with resinous herbal notes and hints of red kola and lime leaf. Reduction brings out bubblegum, black tea sweetened with brown sugar, dried mango and hints of ivy and chamomile.

The palate immediately displays peppermint, blackcurrant jam, dark chocolate, dandelion & burdock, old tobacco, sarsaparilla root, clover and medicine balls. Quite sublime. With water there’s jasmine, juniper, pink peppercorns, grape must, old Calvados, many dried flowers, potpourri, incense and lapsang souchong tea. Exquisite and beautiful whisky."

KNICKERBOCKERS AT A WEDDING

This 12 year old Speysider - the first from this distillery for SMWS Canada - was matured in a refill hogshead and comes in at 58.6%.

Flavour profile:  Spicy & sweet.

Outturn:  325 bottles.

Panel's tasting note:  "The nose had a sophisticated and subtle combination of toffee, honey and cola cubes, lemon tart, rosewater, apricot jam and peach schnapps. The palate was textured and complex – sweet, tangy and bright, but with deeper underlying notes; we got rum and raisin ice-cream and melted dark chocolate, with teasing nips of chili, clove, aniseed and ginger to finish.

We found the reduced nose rewarding and ‘classic’ – dried papaya, pineapple, chocolate orange and a mixture of flowers and fruitcake that evoked weddings. The reduced palate was tasty and sweet – chocolate, fudge, toffee, banana chips and knickerbocker glory, with cinnamon swirls coming later."

THIS AIN'T NO PUSSYCAT

This 10 year old Highlander comes in at 58.4% after maturing in a refill hogshead.

Flavour profile:  Spicy & dry.

Outturn:  205 bottles.

Panel's tasting note:  "An unusually superb waxiness at first. Then lots of pear, green apple, mint and sandalwood. Wee coastal inclusions; grass, mineral salts, hedgerow and undergrowth. Cider apples, green malt, lemon juice and hints of spice cake with touches of graphite oil, sunflower seed and pineapple jelly. Water brings soot, putty, camphor and baking parchment. Underneath there's petrichor, olive oil, dry earth and eucalyptus.

The palate opens unusually on hot roast peppers, then waxed canvas, roasted root vegetables, heather honey, dried lavender, 80 shilling ale, cough mixtures, delicate medical notes, straw, hay lofts and gorse. With water it develops towards white mushrooms, damp tobacco leaf, herbal extracts, polished hardwoods, beeswax, pollen, heather ale, miso broth and rosewater. Superb!"
