Scotch Malt Whisky Society 70.38

B + B = B²
This 13 year old from the Highlands comes in at 57.3% and after 11 years in an ex-bourbon barrel it was transferred into a barrel which previously matured whisky from SMWS distillery number 3.
Flavour profile: Lightly peated.
Outturn: 83 bottles.
Panel's tasting note: "Aromas of a distant wood fire on the beach combined with mellow Virginia tobacco having that typical touch of grassiness and earthiness alongside citrus and a slight floral note. On the palate neat we enjoyed "Bloody Mary oysters“ - fresh, salty, spicy with a hint of sweetness.
When we added water, we stepped into the room the morning after - the air filled with the aroma of empty whisky glasses once filled with peaty whisky and sweet cigar smoke. Oh, what a great night it was surrounded by friends! After 11 years in an ex-bourbon barrel we transferred this whisky into a barrel which previously matured whisky from SMWS distillery number 3."

Producer Description
"Inspired by Islay’s rich history of carnivals, this whisky is a bottling imbued with the ultimate influence of carnival spirit, rum. In a first for the Distillery, we have taken Ardbeg single malt from ex-Bourbon casks, rested it awhile in ex-rum casks from the Americas, giving us…Ardbeg Drum. Discover a mass of complex flavours as they parade across the palate. Fragrant pine resin and woodsmoke dance alongside ripe banana and pineapple, before lavender, liquorice and vanilla strut into a long, smoky finish – a downright wondrous paradiddle of aromas."

92Pts Whisky Advocate - #19 of the Top 20 Whiskies of 2019
"Kurayoshi Distillery lies between Osaka and Hiroshima in the foothills of Mount Daisen, where it produces single malt whiskies brought to proof with soft, mountain spring water. The label, adorned by Hokusai’s The Great Wave, portends this whisky’s rush of flavor: satisfyingly smoky, with noticeable structure and complexity. Kippers on the nose, with burnt aromatic grasses, cocoa, and jellied fruits, and a smoky palate of red apple, ginger, pepper, orange, and mango. Smoke writhes like a serpent on the finish, sliding off the walls dripping with sweet tropical fruits."
