Eléonore Moreau is not only the only female bottler in the tiny village of Poilly sur Serein, but the only bottler, period - all other producers instead sell their fruit to the Chablisienne. Low yields in 2019 threatened Moreau's production, but they did not prevent her from releasing this truly transcendent vintage of her flagship Petit Chablis. The legendary Meadows vineyard lies next to Santa Rosa Creek and is dry-farmed due to the amount of water available deep in the soil for the vines to reach for. The Chardonnay grapes harvested from the plot create bright, fruit-dominant white wine with subtle tropical notes Due to the low yields of the vines, the wine does not become a fruit bomb but one of balance and finesse.

Eleonore Moreau's family had been farming grapes from their vineyards in Chablis since the 1980s and in 2011 she made the decision to produce their own wines rather than selling the fruit to other producers. There's a classic Chablis purity that runs through her wines, in part due to the Kimmeridgian limestone soils that are part of Chablis' claim to fame. Aged in stainless steel (without the influence of oak), the wines remain on their less for 12 - 18 months prior to bottling. The extended lees times lend them richness and complexity with the classic Chablis minerality at the forefront.

Founded in 1866, Bests' is a family-owned and operated winery with some of the oldest and rarest vines in the world. One of the great things about this Great Western Chard is the fact that the grapes come from some of the earliest plantings of Chardonnay in Australia. They are grown on a deep gravel hill with a west-facing slope and what this means is low yields and great intense flavors. After pressing, the wine spent 8 months in 30% new French oak barriques and achieved 30% malolactic fermentation with plenty of lees contact to encourage a rich, complex and textured wine. Aromas of flint and stone fruit are followed by rich and complex notes on the palate yet it remains elegant and subtle.

This is one of our favourite Chablis producers. Moreau's wines are pure, mineral-driven examples of Chardonnay and the Petite Chablis is well-priced for Chablis of this calibre.
