The only differences between the regular Torabhaig Allt Gleann and the Batch Strength, are the ABV (61.1% v. 46%), the effective phenols in the whisky (22.8ppm v. 17ppm as a result of less water), and the availability... less than a 1/3 as much Batch Strength is coming compared to the 46% bottling!

Allt Gleann is the second release from Torabhaig Distillery on the Isle of Skye, and the first whisky from this distillery to find its way to Canada. The Batch Strength is made the same as the 46% bottling, produced from peated Laureate and Concerto Barly, fermented with Saspirit M-1 & Pinnacle MG+ yeasts, and matured in a mix of 80% first fill and 20% refill casks before bottling at 61.1%. The barley was peated to 77ppm with highland peat, with just 22.8ppm in the resulting spirit. The distillery's tag line is that their whiskies exhibit "well-tempered peat!" The 46% version scored an impressive 89pts from Whisky Fun!

"Our second release in The Legacy Series, Allt Gleann is named after one of two burns that feed the distillery. An evolution on the 2017 inaugural release, Allt Gleann introduces Laureate malted barley alongside Concerto, Safspirit M-1 yeast alongside Pinnacle MG+, and re-fill whisky barrels in maturation alongside first-fill bourbon barrels. There is a little more peat and added complexity compared to the 2017 inaugural release, elegantly showcasing the evolution of our spirit."

"This release has all the typicity of Torabhaig that you would expect – bonfire smoke, salinity, maltiness, and sweet, vanilla-led oaky spice. The Allt Gleann Batch Strength is bottled at 61.1% without chill filtration or colouring, and with a residual phenols level of 22.8ppm."

Andrew's Tasting Note

Nose: thick, honeyed and malty with salty smoke and white orchard fruits; summer hay, sage fried in olive oil and Spring lilacs; lemon and pear drops, lemon peel, and baked apples in cinnamon; poached pear with a side of Shropshire Blue; tidal mud flats, beach bonfire smoke, and cigar ash; white chocolate and Manuka honey. 

Palate: sweet, tarry, and fruity, with chewy malt and ashy smoke; a big surge of Manuka honey, clotted cream, and molten white chocolate; more grassy hay, chewy malt, and a salty-silty minerality; more fried sage, dewy lavender, and candied lilacs in chocolate; heavy on the lemon side of things, with baked apples in cinnamon, and apricot jam; the blue cheese and poached pear are still there too; the peat is bolder and more earthy than the 46% bottling, with a more saline, slightly medicinal profile. 

Finish: long, coating, and oily with more white fruits, honey, and hot-sweet spices; malty with tarry-muddy-peat and sweet-ashy smoke.

Comment: the 46% bottling is great, and the Batch Strength is even better... the team at Torabhaig are on their way to greatness!

90pts Whisky Fun

"Matured in 1st fill bourbon (80%) and refill (20%). Using 'batch strength' remains bizarre to our shy ears but I suppose you cannot call it 'cask strength' when you've vatted several casks together, can you? Not too sure, how much water could they have added, while still bottling at 61.1% vol.? (S., is that important?) BTW, it was moderately peated, to around 23ppm peat. Oh and we're on Skye. Colour: white wine. Nose: every time I'm trying Torabhaig – granted, we haven't tried hundreds – the word 'crystalline' springs to mind. This is pure seawater blended with lime juice, granny smith juice, a small bottle of tincture of iodine, and the waters of a dozen oysters. That's all. With water: a lot of fern-type notes, then peppered clams and winkles and whelks and cockles. And a good glass of petroly Alsatian riesling. Mouth (neat): very punchy, full of brine, seawater, chilli (but not of the XXX-end-of-the-world kind) and ashes. Ultra-vertical and really shock-full of ashes of all kinds. With water: dazzling lemons and smoked and salted almonds. I revere smoked almonds, but they are getting rarer and rarer where I live. Actually, it is a scandal. Finish: long, pure, salty and lemony. Those granny smith apples are back in the aftertaste. Comments: pure and crystalline indeed. SGP:566 - 90 points."
