Allt Gleann is the second release from Torabhaig Distillery on the Isle of Skye, and the first whisky from this distillery to find its way to Canada. It was produced from peated Laureate and Concerto Barly, fermented with Saspirit M-1 & Pinnacle MG+ yeasts, and matured in a mix of 80% first fill and 20% refill casks before bottling at 46%. The barley was peated to 77ppm with highland peat, with just 17ppm in the resulting spirit. The distillery's tag line is that their whiskies exhibit "well-tempered peat!" 89pts Whisky Fun!
Producer Description
"Our second release in The Legacy Series, Allt Gleann is named after one of two burns that feed the distillery. An evolution on the 2017 inaugural release, Allt Gleann introduces Laureate malted barley alongside Concerto, Safspirit M-1 yeast alongside Pinnacle MG+, and re-fill whisky barrels in maturation alongside first-fill bourbon barrels. There is a little more peat and added complexity compared to the 2017 inaugural release, elegantly showcasing the evolution of our spirit."
700 mlAndrew's Tasting Note
Nose: fresh, honeyed, and fruity with ashy smoke; malty, late summer grasses, fresh sage, and a hint of lavender; citrus and orchard fruits to kick things off; muddy peat with BBQ coal ash; a bit of honey and vanilla extract.
Palate: fresh and malty with bright fruit and more ashy smoke; more fall grasses and sage, lavender, and lilacs; citric Starburt canides, baked apple, and poached pear; more BBQ coal ash, beach bonfire smoke, and runny honey; smoked kippers and slightly burnt honey garlic ribs.
Finish: medium long with a coating oily body, more ashy smoke, honey, and white fruits; late spices and tarry tones.
Comment: brilliant stuff and a fine addition to the pantheon of peaty west coast malts; I can't wait to see this at 10 years and up; great drinking strength.

"From those lovely folks on Skye that made other lovely folks on Skye change one of their baselines from 'the only Distillery' to 'the oldest Distillery' (and, S.?). I'll add that I found the original release, back in 2020, just incredibly superb (WF 88). Colour: pale white wine. Nose: loads of ashes, apple peel, coal, porridge and lemon juice. Very straight, very peaty, pure, uncomplicated, awesome. Quite some mercurochrome too, I'm sure you could use it to heal any wounds, it's just that you would smell like a walking barbecue. Mouth: straight to the point, pure peaty malt whisky as in pure peaty malt whisky. No flannel, no sideways, and just a feeling of... well-being. As our dearest friends in Italy would say, like peat love this, no like peat not like this. Finish: long and actually more complex, with notes of fino, lemon juice, seawater, ashes of course, oysters, lime… IN a way we're getting even nearer to the Cross (understands who can). Comments: amazing, but clearly more an Islay than a Skye. If I may…" SGP:457 - 89 points.
