!!!Warning, Coldpocalypse Approaching, Time for Some Warming Whiskies!!!

Posted on March 1, 2014

It may be hovering around zero right now, but the mercury is set to plummet over the next few days. With foretasted high temperatures of just -25C before windchill over the next three days, do you have what you need to stay warm during this polar plunge? If not, we've got a little guide for you that might be of assistance to you. We asked ourselves this morning, what 10 whiskies would we need to survive this Coldpocalypse? We decided that only cask strength and or peated single malts would do, this is what we came up with:

10) BenRiach 2001 MS Society Cask - On the softer end of our spectrum this single malt is sweet, malty and fruity with a long finish. And at a cask strength of 54.1% is strength is barely noticeable making it a good choice for those not wanting to be throttled with warmth! $10 per bottle will go to the MS Society of Southern Alberta. - $99.99

9) Scotch Malt Whisky Society G5.7: All Day American Breakfast - Don't let the eye watering alcohol strength of 64.6% scare you off, this 19 year old is a very balanced and decadent whisky, only catch is you have to be a member of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society to buy one (www.smws.ca)... the good news there is we can help you with that too! - $154.99

8) Loch Lomond Green Label Peated Single Malt - Perhaps your budget's a little tight right now, or you're looking for an emergency bottle to keep in the car in case of emergency (no joke I know someone who does this), after all getting stuck on the highway at -30 is nothing to laugh at. At 46% this value dram has a lot of peat layered over subtle fruits. - $55.99

7) Master of Malt Springbank Batch 2 - Supposedly Springbank, I think its actually a Longrow because the peat smoke is very crisp on this tasty little small batch, cask strength bottling. Oily, it also has notes of caramel, sea salt and lots of spice. $159.99

6) Wilson & Morgan Bowmore 15 Year Sherry Finish - Another whopper of a cask strength whisky at 61.3%, the sherry notes don't overwhelm the whisky as they have in the 22 year old bottling. This leaves the house style of round peat smoke, salt and citrus to shine through.  - $139.99

5) Compass Box Peat Monster 10th Anniversary - This limited edition dram made Whisky Advocate's Top 10 New Whiskies list for their Spring 2104 Issue in the #9 spots, scoring 92pts: "Peat Monster is a staple Compass Box blended malt whisky, but this raises the bar significantly. The nose is “as you were”: peat reek, seaside, very Islay. But on the palate John Glaser’s added some peaty Highland whisky—probably a signature Clynelish—to add a hint of licorice, a softer, fruitier smoke base, and through some virgin French oak, a delightful spiciness. Compass Box is in a purple patch." - Whisky Advocate Blog Post

New Belgium Beers Launch in Alberta

Posted on February 26, 2014

New Belgium Brewing Company of Fort Collins, Colorado, launched their products in Alberta for the first time on Monday. The importer Horrizon Wines hosted an event at Craft Beer Market attended by a crowd of hundreds including 4 beer enthusiasts from our store: Marty, Andrew, Hunter and Shawn.

New Belgium Brewery was opened in 1991 after Jeff Lebesch, the brewery's founder, decide to turn his passion for home brewing into the commercial venture. The first beers brewed were the Fat Tire Amber and the Abbey Dubbel, inspired by Jeff’s mountain bike tour (hence the fat tire) of European villages famous for their beer. Demand for the beet prompted the the hiring of Peter Bouckaert, a Belgian Brewmaster who’d previously worked at Rodenbach. As of 2013, New Belgium is the third largest craft brewer in the USA and the eighth largest brewer overall! They distribute to 36 states, British Columbia and now Alberta. New Belgium is currently building a second brewery in Asheville, North Carolina, expected to open in the winter of 2015.

While there were 14 different New Belgium beers on offer at Craft on Monday, the brand will be starting out in Alberta with just two of their core expressions:

Fat Tire Amber – One of the first two beers brewed by the founder, Fat Tire’s appeal quickly became evident. People liked everything about it, except the name. Fat Tire won fans from its sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavours coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness. - $17.79/6pack
Ranger IPA - Bring out the hops! This clear amber beauty bursts at the starting gate with an abundance of hops: Cascade (citrus), Chinook (floral/citrus), and Simcoe (fruity) lead off the beer, with Cascade added again for an intense dry hop flavour. Brewed with pale and dark caramel malts that harmonize the hop flavour from start to finish, Ranger is a sessionable splendor for all you hopinistas. - $17.79/6pack

Both of these New Belgium beers will be available at KWM beginning tomorrow!...

Kensington Wine Market's Best Selling Whiskies of 2013!

Posted on October 25, 2024

2013 was another great year for single malts here at Kensington Wine Market. We pride ourselves on being a little different, and I think that is well reflected in our top selling whiskies. Some of these whiskies would have ranked higher than they do here, had available stocks not sold out. As always our own single casks and exclusives showed very well. The list doesn't reflect our booming Scotch Malt Whisky Society sales, as we never receive more than a couple dozen bottles of these single cask whiskies.

Glendronach 2002 KWM/Quaich Cask708 - This cask was split between the Companions of the Quaich whisky club and our store. More than 600 bottles sold out in under 6 weeks! It is now one for the ages! - $104.99

Ardbeg Ardbog - 2013's Ardbeg Day special release was another huge success. As Canada's first Retail Ardbeg Embassy, we had a bit of a head start on this boggy malt! - $119.99

Glenfarclass 2000 Ranchmen's Anniversary Cask - This was a cask we helped the Ranchmen's Club select to mark their 125th Anniversary. A lovely dram exclusive to their members.

Whisky Advent Calendar - Mixed reviews on this one to be honest, some loved it, many were disappointed. Not strictly a bottle, but a set of 24 30ml samples. - $300

Benromach 2004 KWM Cask 246 - One of two young Benromach casks we had bottled for the store, this, the less smoky of the two was very creamy and fresh. It sold out in about 6 months! - $87.49

Glendronach Cask Strength Batch 2 - The second edition of this whisky edged out the first, not necessarily because it was better, but because we had access to a little more of it. Rumour has it we may get 6 more bottles! - $84.99

Benromach 2005 KWM Cask - Our other Benromach cask is a little younger and a lot more smoky than the first. The distillery claims they were peated to the same level, but they were enormously different on the palate even though their alcohol strengths were coincidentally identical. We still have a few bottles kicking around from this cask. - $84.99

Glendronach Cask Strength Batch 1 - The first batch of what has become quite a hot seller for us. Already Batch 3 is on pace to outsell Batch 1, and could threaten Batch 2. Also worth noting the distillery has caught on to the popularity of these whiskies and their prices are set to climb by about 25%. We stocked up on Batch 3, $90, before the full weight of the price increase takes affect. - $83.99

MacKinlays Rare Old Highland Malt - We ran out of this whisky over the course of the summer, and had we had more it would have finished much higher on the list. It is one of our best selling whiskies of all time! - $209.99

BenRiach 1983 KWM Cask 298 - This was a gem of a cask, beautiful in all senses with a soft, tropical nose and a creamy smooth palate. This ...
