The 2003 vintage: Winter preceding the 2003 harvest was very wet. Flowering took place in bright warm weather at the end of May in some of the best conditions seen for several years. The first two weeks of August provided the intense summer heat which often precedes a great Port vintage. The picking season in September was warm and dry and the yields were even across all grape varieties, ensuring balance and complexity in the wines.

Alvear makes delicious sherry in the sunny region of Andalucia. This smooth, sweet wine is the result of the Pedro Ximenez grapes being left to dry under the sun on esparto-grass mats. Once the fermentation is over, the wine is placed in American oak casks, where it will age by means of the traditional method involving rows of casks known as the solera system begun by Alvear in 1927.
