This organic IGT Tuscan red from La Torre is made of 40% Alicante, 30% Sangiovese, and 30% Ciliegiolo grown on a south-facing vineyard within Montalcino. After fermentation using the natural yeast of the grapes themselves, the wine is aged for one year in smaller oak casks. Only 2600 bottles of this wine are made annually. There was a time when a blend such as this would have been dubbed a "super Tuscan" as the inclusion of any grapes not indigenous to the respective regions was not permitted in any of Italy's DOC or DOCG wines. Wineries forged ahead anyway which eventually led to the creation of the IGT (indicazione geografica tipica, basically "typical of the region") category. The Alicante Bouschet - a French varietal - adds backbone and grip to wine, the end result being a gutsy red but with plush tannins in a core of blackberry and cherry fruit.
