The Heartland story began in the late 1990s when winemaker Ben Glaetzer became excited about the outstanding quality of fruit being grown in some of South Australia’s lesser-known regions, in particular Langhorne Creek.
Together with industry veterans Scott Collett, Grant Tilbroo, and more recently Nick Keukenmeester, they grew Heartland into an award-winning winery. Ben Glaetzer makes Heartland Wines at Barossa Vintners in Tanunda, South Australia, some 100 kilometres from Langhorne Creek. The winery was conceived as a state-of-the-art winemaking facility with the capacity to make wines for a core group of top-end producers whose fame and demand had grown beyond their winemaking capacities. Completed in 1995, Barossa Vintners was developed to make wines in the most natural possible way. The natural slope of the land allows the winery to be gravity fed and avoid a harsh pumping of the grapes juice (Ben also makes his range of Glaetzer wines at this facility, most famously his Amon-ra Shiraz). The growing conditions in Langhorne Creek are predominantly shaped by the onshore southerly winds blowing directly from the Southern Ocean across Lake Alexandrina. The prevailing southerlies reduce daytime temperature fluctuations, making it one of the cooler growing regions in South Australia

Exclusive to KWM, the Dumangin Saignee rosé is a beautiful, intensely aromatic Champagne. The grapes are hand harvested, hand sorted then spend about a 48 to 72 hour maceration period. This vintage Champagne is only made in the very best years and is primarily Pinot Meunier (50%) and Pinot Noir. The Becker family owns more than 30 hectares and produces over 12,000 cases annually. Positioned on the very border with France in the town of Schweigen, the Beckers have witnessed that border shifting throughout history. Today, they have vineyards on both the French and German sides, at the edge of the Palatinate (Pfalz) forest—with 50 percent of their land situated on the French side in Alsace.
The soils in the area are composed of deep layers of shell limestone, with various topsoils, which in combination with the region’s mild climate, provide the ideal growing conditions for Spätburgunder. Hence, the logical focus is on the variety. As one of the pioneers, Fritz Becker Sr. was also one of the first winemakers in the region to mature his Spätburgunder in barriques.
Their most prestigious vineyard is Kammerberg, a steep single vineyard on deep marl and limestone near Wissembourg, recovered by Fritz Sr. in 1967. The old vines are mostly German clones and some French and grow on deep marl lime soils that produce powerful but also refined, mineral-driven Pinot Noirs (it is all about the dirt here!); St. Paul cultivated here in the 14th century by the Cistercians of Wissembourg, which had since become overgrown but the Beckers uprooted trees and bushes in early 2000 and planted Spätburgunder; and Sonnenberg, with poor limestone soils ideal for growing Riesling.

Grosjean Petite Arvine

Valle d'Aosta is an Alpine region in North-West Italy known for expressive and mineral-focused wines. The first authentic records, found in the historic archive of the Valle d'Osta, state that the first appearance of the Grosjean Family name was around the 16th century. Originally from Switzerland, the Petite Arvine grape has adapted well to the valley’s conditions. Introduced to the region during the 1970s, it occupied the central part of the valley and was planted at an altitude between 600 and 900 metres above sea level. It has become well suited to their draining steep mountainsides. A recent study shows that the Petite Arvine seems to have a close link to the native Prié Blanc grape. Try it with appetizers, white fish and poultry.

St. Antony is a top-shelf riesling producer making high-quality wine since 1912. The ultra-modern winery they built sits on top of cellars that hold decades of premium riesling, a white grape that ages as well, if not better, than any first-growth Bordeaux or Burgundy (and for a lot less). These are dry wines, brimming with minerality and acidity, and three of the four we received are GG (Grosses Gewächs), the grand cru designation for dry German riesling. They are situated in the town of Nierstein, a charming village that is effectively the epicentre of wine in the Rheinhessen. Praised by critics and adored by riesling lovers, these are beautiful, mineral-driven wines that are delicious now and even better over time.
The Brudersberg monopoly site faces south throughout. The extreme steepness and the direct influence of the Rhine make the Brudersberg very special. Despite the omnipresent sunshine, the wines are not overly opulent, as some GG wines can be. Rather, they are characterized by a fine minerality, elegance and a very special longevity. In the glass, clear aromas of the terroir with flint and graphite, followed by lychee, apricot, lemon curd and peach notes. Very elegant and drinkable on the palate, bright acidity and a mineral-laden finish. Gorgeous riesling.

Ruxe is made by Andrea Obenza of Coca i Fitou, a highly respected producer based in Montsant. This Ribeira Sacra project is made from the Mencía varietal, a red grape that is gaining favour around the globe. The wine is made with the notion of conveying the mineral essence of the area by blending grapes from different schist soils found on the banks of the Sil River. An Atlantic wine, mineral, saline, aromatic, excellent acidity, tart fruits, soft tannins, herbaceous notes and sweet and savoury spices. The result is a medium-bodied wine with excellent length..
