This low strength is more easily understood when you consider the whisky was matured in both Ex-Bourbon Barrels and more crucially Quarter Casks, 125L barrels. One of the most interesting Auchentoshans we've seen yet. The Bartender's Malt was the construct of a dozen of the world's best bartenders. Their goal? Build a malt whisky big enough to stand up to the demands of cocktails that require Scotch whisky as one of their ingredients. Whether or not you believe it borders on blasphemy to bury a fine single malt whisky in juices and syrups and fruit is a debate for another day, but it should be made clear what these 12 innovators were up against. Auchentoshan is a Lowland malt, triple distilled, with a reputation for being something of a lightweight. By nature, something like that is bound to get out-muscled in a mixed drink, right? Well...not necessarily. They've upped the abv, included some spicier, more lively casks (of all sorts!), and vatted whiskies from the last five decades in order to create something that was punchy enough to cut through. And you know what? They've succeeded.

Peatheads, rejoice! For those searching for a fix of sharp, young peat and bucketloads of billowy smoke, look no further. Port Askaig is a wee ferry port off the east coast of the isle of Islay. Its proximity to two of the island's most unfairly overlooked distilleries should give some sort of clue as to the pedigree of this neat little treat of a dram. Your choices are either Caol Ila or Bunnahabhain, and let's just say the answer rhymes with Caol Ila (Do you know how hard it is to rhyme in Gaelic?!).
If you know the distillery's character you'll immediately be able to see it all over this one. A true value whisky too. 45.8% abv, uncolored and non-chill-filtered.

Distiller's Description
Maturation in refill Sherry seasoned casks prevents oak from dominating the flavours of the whisky as it would if first-fill casks were used. This allows our robust and oily new make spirit to gently mature over an extended period of time, delivering a full-on aromatic peat flavour with a surprisingly sweet finish.
