Adrianna Catena is the youngest daughter of Nicolás Catena Zapata, the most famous name in Argentinean viticulture. She has lived and breathed wine since childhood. Today, Adrianna blends her experience in academia with her passion for viticulture and winemaking, dividing her time between El Enemigo Wines and Catena Zapata. She lives between London and Mendoza, and California (she is also an ER doctor at San Fransisco's busiest hospital). Alejandro Vigil has been Chief Winemaker of Bodega Catena Zapata since 2002, receiving the first 100-point score awarded to a South American wine by Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate (CZ River Stones 2016), and the highest rating ever given to a pure Cabernet Franc (Gran Enemigo Gualtallary 2013). He also holds the first 100-point score for an Argentine Chardonnay from James Suckling (CZ White Bones 2018). This is El Enemigo.

Owners John and Virginia Weber both grew up in Southern Saskatchewan. Virginia worked as a nurse and John taught High School. Life settled and things were good until they met the Similkameen Valley in 2001. The desire to try something new, their love of wine and the beauty of the Similkameen convinced them to purchase a vineyard and move from Saskatchewan to Cawston. They quickly fell in love with the area and its burgeoning wine industry. Today they have 19 years of experience making wine in the region and produce some of the valley's best.
Spearhead Golden Retreat Pinot Noir

Spearhead Winery is located on the benchlands of South East Kelowna. Their focus is on premium quality wine produced from grapes from estate-grown vineyards and from selected Okanagan Valley vineyards. The hand-harvested grapes are sorted at the winery and fermented in small lots. They grow Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. Approximately 80% of 15 acres of vines is comprised of Pinot Noir including four different Dijon clones, 2 California heritage clones and Pommard. This combination of plantings enables their winemaker to select from the different characteristics exhibited by these clones to create a harmonious, complex Pinot Noir from our home vineyard. They also draw from several other vineyards in the Okanagan including Golden Retreat in Summerland and Coyote Vineyard in West Kelowna.
The vineyard and winemaking teams are led by Grant Stanley. A highly respected BC winemaker, Grant has been at the helm as Winemaker/General Manager for a few years now and he has transformed their winemaking program. His commitment to showcasing specific terroirs of the Central Okanagan Valley is evident in the ‘single vineyard’ program they have developed for Pinot Noir bottlings. These wines display the unique attributes of the Okanagan vineyards that they were sourced from. They also produce Pinot Noir blends which combine the characteristics of different vineyards, including their benchmark Cuvee.

Kurinji was a neat little surprise when we were tasting our way through the Victoria Whisky Festival. Our good friend Ashok pulled this out and poured a dram, with a big smile on his face. It was easy to smile along. This is a ridiculously pretty little sipper. Easy going and very charming. The label says Batch 1, so hopefully we see more editions in the future.
