The Big Peat makes one promise: 'peat." Vatted from single malts distilled at Ardbeg, Bowmore, Caol Ila and Port Ellen. What more could you ask for? This whisky may be made with Bowmore and Caol Ila, but it is its Ardbeg which is most dominant. Given that Port Ellen has been closed for 35 years, and any whisky from that distillery is now very mature, even the addition of only a small amount is very special. Earthy, chocolaty, salty, smoky, peaty and lightly medicinal. This whisky truly is Islay in a bottle. 46%.

Machir Bay was the first edition of the Kilchoman core range, and it remains a staple. Matured in First Fill Bourbon and Oloroso Sherry casks, the whisky has been getting older as the distillery's inventory matures. Bottled at 46% without colouring or chill filtering.

This is the new core release of Lagavulin 8 Year, released on the heels of the highly successful 200th Anniversary release of Lagavulin 8 Year. Bottled at 48% it was matured in ex-Bourbon barrels and ex-wine seasoned casks.

A curious bottling of mature Laphroaig, bottled at a very low cask strength of 41.7%. This low strength is more easily understood when you consider the whisky was matured in both Ex-Bourbon Barrels and more crucially Quarter Casks, 125L barrels. Distilled in 2009 from organically grown barley harvested in 2008, the whisky was matured 8 years in ex-Bourbon and Tennessee whiskey barrels before bottling at 50%!

Just as our stillmen refuse to abandon the traditional crafts of distillation in favour of automation or industrialisation, so farmer William Rose rejects the use of herbicides, pesticides and artificial fertilisers. Our barley must take its turn in a seven year farm cycle that also produces organic cattle, sheep, oats, beans, grass, carrots, market gardening and a megawatt of green electricity. Finally back in stock, but sadly we do have to limit to 1 per customer! Demand for Islay's sleeper distillery has been outrageous lately - deservedly so - but it does mean we have to try to spread the wealth a wee bit.
Bunna 25 (or XXV, if you're hung on what the labels say) is an icon. It is unquestionably one of the most rich and elegant 25s on the market. Expect that salty oceanic tang we all know and love, but at the same time expect it to be well-tempered with gorgeous old sherry and deep fruitcake notes. While 'fruitcake' is a bit of a cheat when it comes to tasting notes, it's hard to argue in this case. And man...what a mouthfeel.

Nose: Scents of rich sherry, blossoming into sweet caramel and polished leather.
Palate: An initial taste of sweet berries and cream that evolves into a feast of roasted nuts and malt.
Finish: Soft and dry with a delicate hint of sweet sugar and spiced oak that linger long on the tongue.

We could have left it at that, but sometimes the distillery has such a special place in our hearts that we need to take it a step or two further. Bowmore is Islay's oldest distillery. It was founded in 1779 along the shores of Loch Indaal, the body of water that nearly bisects the isle of Islay. The waves literally lick the walls of the warehouses, and whether or not you believe in the idea of whisky terroir, there is simply no debate when it comes to acknowledging that the barrels rolling out of these ancient dunnage warehouses truly are something special.
Bowmore 18 has had its ups and downs throughout the years, but in the past few releases we've been privy to, show the distillery back at the top of its game. Seemingly gone are the lavender-heavy days of distillation; we're back in full-on fruit mode. And the smoke? Bold enough to provide an unwavering backbone, yet gentle enough to expand the appeal well beyond the peat-addicted masses. Great to have Bowmore back where it should be.

Scarabus is a new single malt from Hunter Laing, the owners of the new Ardnahoe Distillery. The whisky is sourced from an undisclosed Islay distillery, as it will be years until Ardnahoe's whisky comes of age. Launched in May on Islay at Feis Isle 2019. The name of the whisky can be traced back to the 13th century, and means "A rocky place" in Norse. Bottled at 46% without colouring or chill-filtering. Tastes like peated Bunnahabhain.
