Lindores Abbey Commemorative Single Malt

Lindores Abbey Commemorative Single Malt

$79.99

The first release from the new Lowland Lindores Abbey Distillery was matured in ex-Bourbon, Sherry, & Wine Casks before bottling at 46%. Though just 3-4 years of age, the whisky shows a lot of promise.

This first release is a nod to the first-ever reference of whisky making, which took place at Lindores Abbey, now in ruins, in 1494. A letter to Friar John Cor was instructed by King James IV to make "auqa vitae, VIII bolls of malt." The ruins sit on lands owned by Drew and Helen McKenzie Smith. In 2017 they opened the Lindores Abbey Distillery with the intent of making it an estate distillery. Beginning in 2020, all of the barley used by the distillery was sourced from the surrounding fields.

Andrew's Tasting Note

Nose: creamy, malty and floral; walnuts and Marcona almonds; white furits, melons and citrus with gentle toasted oak; grocery store bought gouda and aged cheddar.

Palate: juicy, fruity and malty with a backbone of soft oak spice; light fresh and nutty with more white fruits, underripe melons and crisp citrus; more cheese and Demerara sugar in tea dregs.

Finish: soft, floral and malty with white fruits, shelled nuts and toasted oak.

Comment: this is young, but balanced and brimming with promise; a good first release!

Evan’s Tasting Note

Nose: Pine resin, milk chocolate, honey on toasted rye bread, Earl Grey tea, vanilla-scented candles, and Kellog's Frosted Mini-Wheats cereal.

Palate: Soft and honeyed, oatmeal with brown sugar, salted Marcona almonds, chamomile tea and plateful shortbread cookies and gingerbread cookies on the side,

Finish: Smooth and warming with lingering salty almond and honey notes.

Comment: A very solid first release from a distillery worth keeping an eye on.

Producer Tasting Note

Nose: Elegant, soft, mellow vanilla, caramel notes playing with orchard fruits and sweet pear drops. Reminiscent of toffee apples!

Palate: Smooth with a creamy texture and a perfect balance of mellow vanilla, dried fruits, citrus touches with a hint of spice.

Finish: Medium length, delicate but lingering finish
