Producer Description

"Pelotón de la Muerte joven is produced by Hector Obregon in Mazatlan, Guerro. It is produced using 100% Maguey Criollo (A. Angustifolia Rubescens). The cooked agaves are fermented in open-air for 5 days. Next it is double distilled in both an arabic and filipino still with a wood hat.  It was notes of candied apple and sweet caramel.

Pelotón de la Muerte 

The Pelotón de la Muerte label is the flag The Doliente Hidalgo, a banner that represented the insurgent army call “The squadron of death”, which sought revenge for the murder of the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. The red in the flag represents the blood of the leader, the black cross represents the mourning for the priest Dolores, and the bones honor his remains. Pelotón de la Muerte is from Mezcales de Leyenda and geared towards the cocktail scene.

Excellent young Caol Ila from local darlings Cut/Point. This is brash and loud-mouthed young Caol Ila, make no mistake, but there's also a sort of hidden complexity here; not in the sense that it's tough to unravel, but more like there's a rather difficult balance being struck here. There's a lot of youth on display - which is great when drinking peated whisky, as youth generally equals big smokiness - but it drinks far from underripe. A style that perfectly suggests the aromas you'll encounter at the distillery.

Finally, full-size portions of Two Stacks have hit our shelves. The First Cut is a rather complicated five-part blend that pulls together a few styles, grains, and cask types. In fact, this may be one of the most interesting bits of Irish alchemy we've ever seen. The good people at Two Stacks say that this one is made from Virgin Oak Grain, Ex-Bourbon Grain, Ex-Oloroso Pot Still, Ex-Bourbon Double Distilled Malt and Ex-Bourbon Peated Malt. 43% and non chill-filtered.

Interesting side notes: This is one of the first whiskies we have received that we know was sourced from The Great Northern Distillery in Louth, Ireland. ​The distillery was founded by John Teeling in 2015. John Teeling previously owned and operated the Kilbeggan Whisky Company (Cooley and Kilbeggan Distilleries) until selling the company to Beam Global (Now Beam Suntory) in late 2011.​ John's sons Jack and Stephen Teeling founded the Teeling Whisky Company in 2012 and opened a distillery with the same name in Dublin.
