Organic farming is fundamental to every aspect of Constantia Uitsig, with a holistic approach that integrates crop and organic farming to vineyard management. The talented estate farming team are as adept at nurturing vines, as they are developing new land, or working within the winery. Harmony and vitality of the vines is the main focus of all the activities in the vineyard. Their viticulture is centred around the careful use of resources as well as location-specific and natural development of the vines. Compost from manure and pomace is spread to revitalize the soil; the rich flora of the green rows of vines ensures a balanced supply of nutrients and promotes biodiversity. The use of beneficial insects and the lack of pesticides ensures that the plants and grapes are kept healthy and natural.

Claude Dugat has long been a respected and beloved figure in Burgundy, and the wines produced at his eponymous domaine have captivated the world. Working alongside him for the better part of the last decade has been his son Bertrand and daughter Laetitia, to whom Claude turned over control of the estate with the 2015 vintage.

While the Dugat family traces its roots in Gevrey back to the 19th century, it was not until 1955, when Claude’s father Maurice purchased the historic landmark Grange des Dimes and converted the stone barn into a winery that the family domaine was born. The family farms some six hectares throughout Gevrey, with many of the region’s oldest vines falling under their care in sites such as Lavaux Saint-Jacques, Charmes-Chambertin, Chapelle-Chambertin, and Griottes-Chambertin.

Brave New Spirits Annandale 8 Year 52.9%

I believe that this is the first bottling from Lowland Distillery Annandale that we have seen in Alberta. Bottled by Brave New Spirits and part of its Whisky Heroes line of comic book inspired labels, This Annandale single malt was matured for 8 years in a 1st Fill Oloroso Sherry Butt, then bottled at 52.9%.

About Annandale Distillery

Built in the 1830s and first opened in 1836, Annandale Distillery has a tumultuous history. The distillery was rebuilt and expanded in 1887, and It was purchased by Johnnie Walker & Son in 1895. Johnnie Walker & Son operated Annandale until around 1916 when it was shut down. The distillery site was owned by the Robinson family from 1924 to 2007, but never used for distillation during that time. The Robinson's owned the Provost brand of porridge oats. The distillery buildings were used for production of the porridge, and warehouses on the site homed cattle instead of casks.

The site was purchased in 2007 by David Thomson and Teresa Church, and whisky production began again in 2014. The current Annandale Distillery Company has been releasing official bottlings since 2018, though the focus has curiously been solely on single casks. No plans have been made for a wide-scale release at this time.
