As a farmer, Luigi Einaudi displayed intelligence and far-sightedness. When he used rooted grafts on American rootstock to combat phylloxera, he brought modern viticulture to the Langhe. He decided in 1915 to create a cellar to produce and bottle wine, rather than just selling the grapes. He at once began to buy vineyards that enjoyed a particular position, exposure and soil quality in order to produce the best wines. Today, it is Matteo Sardagna Einaudi, Paola’s son, who is at the helm of the company, and they produce some of most exsquisite examples of Barolo, Barbaresco, and Dolcetto in Piedmont.

Tucked behind the Serra Grossa, at the top of the Alrorins-Alcusses valley, sits the idyllic site of Celler del Roure, an estate developed by Pablo Calatuyud and his father to shine a light on a more ancient and authentic style of Valencian, away from the bulk production the area was becoming more recognized for. His intention to rehabilitate long-forgotten grapes such as Mando, Arcos and Verdil was solidified with the discovery of a 500-year-old cellar on the mountainside property, with subterranean clay amphoras ‘tinajas’ in near-perfect condition. The owners describe the affinity of ancient grapes and amphora as nothing short of magical. Looking across the landscape from the winery, you can’t but notice the higher exposed chalky white soils akin to albariza, whilst closer to the winery there is more sand both of which add delicacy and freshness to the wines. The altitude and the cooling east winds help maintain the acidity and freshness of the grapes, providing a remarkable location for vine cultivation in this warm Mediterranean region. The site also has deep historical significance, as archeologists have discovered evidence of a 4th-century civilization on the site of Bastide de les Alcusses.

"The most recent addition to the series is a bottle moulded in the distinctive ‘mallet’ shape which had become well established in England by the 1730s. It represents the transition from the early ‘onion’ bottle to the straight sided ‘cylinder’ shape, similar to that of modern bottles, which emerged from around 1750. The Historic Limited Edition series will continue in future with further releases of bottles inspired by the classic bottle shapes of the past.

For each of the historic bottles in the series, Taylor Fladgate’s skilled blenders have created a wood aged Reserve Port drawn from the company’s extensive reserves and matured in oak casks in its ‘lodges’ in Oporto. Joh. Jos. Prüm needs no introduction to Riesling lovers, having already become a Mosel icon during the nearly five decades during which its namesake’s son Sebastien was in charge. Katharina Prüm has been active alongside her father, Manfred, since early in the new millennium, and the two of them perpetuate a house style that has itself become a Mosel archetype: wines of delicacy and restrained sweetness, often strongly marked in youth by yeasty and otherwise fermentative aromas, and tingling with dissolved CO2. Their longevity is legendary, and the Prüms personally don’t care to drink their own wines – even the Kabinetts – with less than a dozen, and usually many more, years in bottle. The aromas of youthful Prüm wines make it obvious that fermentation here is entirely spontaneous. Manfred makes no secret of his longstanding disinterest in legally dry wines.
