Tucked behind the Serra Grossa, at the top of the Alrorins-Alcusses valley, sits the idyllic site of Celler del Roure, an estate developed by Pablo Calatuyud and his father to shine a light on a more ancient and authentic style of Valencian, away from the bulk production the area was becoming more recognized for. His intention to rehabilitate long-forgotten grapes such as Mando, Arcos and Verdil was solidified with the discovery of a 500-year-old cellar on the mountainside property, with subterranean clay amphoras ‘tinajas’ in near-perfect condition. The owners describe the affinity of ancient grapes and amphora as nothing short of magical. Looking across the landscape from the winery, you can’t but notice the higher exposed chalky white soils akin to albariza, whilst closer to the winery there is more sand both of which add delicacy and freshness to the wines. The altitude and the cooling east winds help maintain the acidity and freshness of the grapes, providing a remarkable location for vine cultivation in this warm Mediterranean region. The site also has deep historical significance, as archeologists have discovered evidence of a 4th-century civilization on the site of Bastide de les Alcusses.

This aromatic red bursts out of the glass with a big bouquet of aromas that includes black licorice, tea, campfire smoke and black fruits. On the palate, it's all cassis, black fruits and spice, with firm but ripe and well-integrated tannins. It spends its time 90% French and 10% American oak barrels and will continue to improve for another 8 -10 years. The 2017 is a blend of Garnacha, Carinena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. It would like to hang out with a slab of prime rib.

The Le Clos des Cazaux estate has been a family property focused on viticulture for five generations since Gabriel Archimbaud, an ancestor, was one of the first to produce wines from Vacqueyras in 1947. It is now owned and operated by brothers Jean-Michel and Frédéric Vache. They farm 35 hectares, 20 in Vacqueyras and another 15 in Gigondas. They own mostly low-yielding hillside vineyards, fashioning high-quality white wines, rosés, and red blends. Their Gigondas vineyards are situated in the heart of the Dentelles de Montmirail massif range that has been in the family since the 1950s. This very special terroir benefits from the solar power of the southern slope, balanced by the cool nights at higher altitudes, mostly on clay soils. The reds are blended primarily from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. however, they include lesser-known grapes such as Aubun, Counoise, Cinsault, Muscardin and Carignan. The white wines mainly employ old-vine Clairette, complemented by Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, and a little Viognier.

Neleman Wines was created by Dutch-born winemaker Derrick Neleman. A student of biodynamic farming techniques, Neleman created his winery with an eye to make “good wine to save the world”. In addition to being organic and vegan, the wines are also CPC (carbon proof) certified. The Dutch bicycle on the colourful label represents not only Nelemans Dutch heritage but also how he transports his grapes to the winery by bicycle. Going beyond what is in the bottle, he is also concerned about how his wines are packaged. He advocates boxed wines as they have less of a carbon footprint, and his bottled wines are sealed with a unique screw NDTech cork. Using cork has less impact on the environment and helps curb forest fires.
