Our first KWM single barrel Bourbon in a while and our very first ever from the Woodford Distilleryof Versailles, Kentucky. This Double Oaked Woodford Reserve Bourbon was finished in a New Heavily Toasted Lightly Charred Barrel before bottling at 45.2%, exclusively for your friends at Kensington Wine Market!

Nose: A carpenter's shop: set ablaze but quickly put out by the fire department. Dark chocolate mousse with a maple syrup glaze, lightly roasted coffee beans, and both apple and cherry strudel.
Palate: Dark Rye toast with Nutella spread. Kahlua liqueur-filled dark chocolates, dates stuffed with blue cheese wrapped in prosciutto, a dash of Irish cream, black forest cake with cherry filling, poached peaches with a balsamic reduction, and a cafe mocha to wash it all down. Did I mention chocolate?
Finish: The toast and char of the oak is there but it doesn't manage to overwhelm the decadence of this dram. Roasted hazelnuts and almonds covered in chocolate.
Comment: It can be a gamble when don't get to pick the cask ourselves, but I love the richer, darker take on the regular Woodford Double Oak.
Andrew's Tasting Note
Nose: nutty, goat's milk dark chocolate, polished oak and vanilla; caramel tarts and buttery pecan pie; brandy-soaked cherries and orange peel.
Palate: more brandy-soaked cherries, and singed orange peel, with bitters... is this an Old Fashioned? loads of toasted oak, vanilla, and more of that game-y goat's milk dark chocolate; still nutty too.
Finish: warming and spicy with lovely aromatics; both citrus and dark fruits; sweet, toasty and chocolatey.
Comment: this is my kind of Bourbon, not too woody, but packed with aromatics and fruits; why go to the trouble of mixing an Old Fashioned, with all the added sugars, when you have this... just pour it in a glass and serve; whether to add an ice cube is up to you!

Woodford Reserve is made from a combination of the triple distilled Bourbon made at Woodford blended with Shively/Louisville's Brown-Forman Distillery plant which uses a column still. This means there is likely some shared DNA between this and the Old Forester Bourbon - even beyond both whisky brands being owned by the same family company. 45.2%

This Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskey from Woodford Reserve is a different beast - not quite a Bourbon but also not a Single Malt Whiskey. Bearing the moniker Straight Malt Whiskey means that it has to use a minimum of 51% Malt, and it does exactly that with a mash bill also containing 47% Corn and 2% Rye. Like Bourbon, it is matured in Virgin American Oak Barrels that are heavily charred. Bottled at 45.2%.
