The Bladnoch Talia, part of the first release of official bottling to ever come to Canada from the Lowland Distillery, was finished in virgin French oak before bottling at 43.2%. I believe it has been discontinued, and is to be replaced with a 26 or 27 year old moving forward. 89pts Whisky Base
Producer Description
“Honouring Bladnoch’s traditional style, this malt is brought together using a blend of three different woods, ex Bourbon, ex Sherry, ex Whisky(Refill?) and finally finished in brand new American Oak”
750ml mlAndrew's Tasting Note
Nose: raspberry coulee, and fruit compote; sour cherries and Earl Grey creme brulee; soft leather, creme caramel and dulce de leche; very decadent; frozen yogurt and doughy fruit flan.
Palate: round, rich and coating; silky, floral and decadent vanilla; more creme brulee, dulce de leche, frozen yogurt and creme caramel; toasted almonds and creamed heather honey; warm pie crust right from the oven with a raspberry filling; delicate tropical fruits slowly start to emerge from behind dark milk chocolate, leather and building spices; waxy Strawberry Twizzlers.
Finish: layered, coating and rich; still decadent, creamy and fruity with warming spices and soft tropical fruits.
Comment: it took me a while to figure out what is going on here, I could quite pin down the Strawberry Twizzlers note, but it finally hit me; this was finished in virgin oak, and the effect is velvetty, creamy and floral; packed with bright berry fruits and decadence; curious to have finished this in virgin oak, but I think it worked; I should probably pour another measure to be sure... quality control!
