The 2018 Vintage of DuMOL's Monticello Cabernet Sauvignon comes from 50+ year-old vines. It was aged for 20 months in 55% new French Oak Barrels.
In 1964, the magical Montecillo Vineyard was planted at 1,700 feet on the steep slope of Moon Mountain, a stone’s throw across the Napa–Sonoma border, on the western side of Mount Veeder. Its highly eroded iron-rich red soils yield wines of unmistakable pedigree: distinct, powerful, complex flavours that can only be achieved in this rugged place—a pure, natural translation of gnarly old vines on the rockiest soils imaginable.

Winery Tasting Note (2018 Vintage)
Aromas of black plum and cassis merge with savory notes of sage, bay laurel and black pepper spice. An underscore of sweet tobacco and lead pencil interlace with complex ferrous notes. On the palate, generous red and black fruits lead the entry, offset by mountainside pine sap and dried herb edges. Broad tannins bring a sense of roundness to the palate, the texture expansive and lush with a well-structured, lingering finish of licorice, tapenade and rose petal. Decant if possible and drink between mid-2021 and 2030.

93 Points - Erin Brooks - "The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard, from vines planted in 1964, was picked on September 20, before the fires started in October of 2017. Medium to deep ruby-purple, it has classic scents of black currants, milk chocolate, dried herbs, fresh tobacco leaf and a streak of graphite. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm, finely grained and restrained with good juiciness and a long, mineral-driven finish."

93 Points - Erin Brooks - "The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard comes from vines planted in 1964. It was aged 20 months in 50% new Atelier oak. Medium to deep ruby, it offers scents of fresh herbs, mint chocolate, cedar, pencil shavings, blackcurrant and baked black cherries plus warm red cherry preserves, crushed stone and leather hints. Medium to full-bodied, it offers a good interplay of spice/herbs with ripe black fruits in the mouth, framed by very ripe, finely pixelated tannins and great freshness to lift the long, concentrated, layered finish. 320 cases produced."
DuMOL was founded in 1996, focusing on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from distinctive vineyards in Sonoma and Napa Valley. Over the 25 years of operation, they have honed their skill in making wines of place and distinction. DuMOL has added to the roster of varietals to include small lots of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Viognier. DuMOL is farming small select parcels across more than two dozen very special vineyard sites. These sites include their own vineyard as well as others in the Russian River Valley and sites in Sonoma Coast and Carneros regions. Andy Smith, head winemaker and partner, says it takes time to determine the detailed characteristics of a vineyard and then to use the right winemaking techniques to produce the best wine possible from that site. The capacity at the winery is 15,000 cases annually. The winery is not open to the public and sales are through their mailing list, restaurants and a small selection of public retailers.

This is one of the classic California Cabs, and the 2016 vintage, the 35th, earned a perfect 100pt score from Wine Advocate. This Cabernet Sauvignon is big and rich without being overwrought. Lovely aromatic nuances give way to great mouthfeel and length with wonderful, dynamic energy. Aged 20 months in French oak barrel (60% new). The blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot.
Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown 100 POINTS: "An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase, and consume. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is still very tight and youthful, slowly unfurling to reveal a multifaceted wine with tons of black, blue and red fruit sparks – plums, cherries, black currants and red currants – with dark chocolate, cedar chest, black tea and red roses in the background plus wafts of pencil lead and prosciutto. Medium-bodied and firmly textured by superbly ripe, grainy tannins, it has a fantastic core of intense, complex layers, finishing on an edifying mineral note. Wow! 2022–2060. (October 2018)"

DuMOL winemaker and partner Andy Smith says this about the Highland Divide Chardonnay "... this is not just a mixing of vineyards and barrels; there’s great equilibrium in this special assembly." The Highland Divide is the result of sourcing grapes from some of DuMOL's own estate vineyards and partner vineyards at higher elevations within the Russian River Valley. Barrel fermenting and aging takes place in a combination of stainless steel tanks and new and used French Oak, lending this Chardonnay both power and subtle complexity.

Composed of Pinot from DuMOL Estate (20%), Macintyre Estate (20%), 18% Occidental Road (18%), Flax Estate (6%), and Dutton Ranch Vineyards (6%). Pinot Noir clones used include Calera, Swan, Pommard and Dijon, vine age is 6-24 years. Aged 12 months in 25% new French oak barrels, followed by 3 months settling in tank.
