The GlenAllachie 18-year-old is back, in new livery... but little else has changed... it is still bottled at 46% after maturing in American oak ex-Bourbon and ex Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso sherry casks.
Producer Description
"This opulent Scotch whisky was patiently perfected in the finest oak casks for 18 long years. Silently slumbering in our on-site warehouses, the spirit underwent continual monitoring until Billy Walker deemed it had reached its pinnacle.
"With enticing aromas of honey and mocha, followed by marzipan and dark cherry tones on the palate, it’s a single malt oozing elegant refinement.
"We proudly present The GlenAllachie 18-year-old with integrity; at a high strength of 46%, without added colouring or chill filtration, allowing the unpeated whisky’s true character to reign supreme."
700 mlAndrew's Tasting Note
Nose: dumpy, dark, and chocolaty, with loads of dark fruits; sticky toffee pudding with treacle sauce, Christmas cake, and Caramilk bar; dark goat's milk chocolate and cardamom ice cream.
Palate: still dark, dumpy, and chocolaty; the sherry is nuttier than the nose let on; sour plums, more dried dark fruits, craisins, and soft spices; sticky toffee pudding drizzled in treacle sauce and floating in vanilla bean ice cream; boozy Christmas cake, Caramilk bar, and more of that game-y dark goat's milk chocolate;
Finish: long, rich, fruity, and chocolaty with fading sherry notes; powerful and pretty.
Comment: this is modern sherry, but well done; I'd really like to put it up against some earlier batches... but that would have required saving one; it is excellent value compared to other sherry forward 18 year olds from more egotistical brands!
Producer Tasting Note
Nose: Toffee sauce, cinnamon spice and fresh vanilla pods, with attributes of cocoa, honeycomb and cherries.
Palate: Bursts of marzipan, sultanas and rich dark chocolate, leading to wild honey, maraschino cherries and buttercream.
