Moss Wood Margaret River Pinot Noir 2022

Moss Wood Margaret River Pinot Noir 2022

$67.99

Established in 1969, Moss Wood is an important, founding estate of the Margaret River wine region in the northern sub–region of Wilyabrup, Western Australia. Clare & Keith Mugford, as winemakers, viticulturalists & proprietors, have been making wine & tending the vineyard at Moss Wood since 1984 & 1979, respectively. Their exacting viticulture ensures the production of high-quality fruit, and they have created a stable of fine wines distinguished by their consistency over each vintage, along with their ability to age superbly.

They have put significant effort into developing an appropriate style for each of their wines, but Cabernet Sauvignon, their first wine, is still the primary focus. Naturally, they looked to the great wines of Bordeaux for inspiration and carefully examined the factors that have made Bordeaux the benchmark for Cabernet Sauvignon.

As they were making wine in Margaret River inspired by those of the Medoc, they felt it was important to consider the Bordeaux environment as opposed to Margaret River’s individualistic climate and terroir. Wine writer Jancis Robinson has called them the Chateau Latour of Australia, and, we might add, for a fraction of what Latour costs.

Winery Tasting Note (2022 Vintage)

Nose: Primary aromas of red fruit; strawberry, raspberry and red cherry. Floral notes of rose petal and potpourri. Background characters of cedar, mushroom and forest floor with subtle clove and charred oak on the finish.

Palate: Bright, mouth-filling fruit notes of strawberry, cherry and plum. Pleasant spice characters of nutmeg, clove, cinnamon and dried herbs. Plenty of fruit density without being overpowering. Creamy and velvety in texture, the tannins and acid sit nicely in the background, helping give the wine power right through the middle and back palate.

Cellaring: The 2022 Moss Wood Pinot Noir is a vibrant and approachable wine, offering lively fruit flavours and a well-balanced profile that's makes it perfect for drinking now. Yet, like many of its counterparts, it has a promising future in the cellar for those willing to be patient. With a decade of aging, it will begin to show some bottle complexity, and true maturity will unfold over the next 20 or so years and more. By then, it should retain its red and dark fruit characteristics while evolving to reveal the variety’s classic earthy notes of mushroom, meat, farmyard, and freshly turned soil. A wonderfully showing, current example of a Moss Wood aged vintage is the 1992, which has consistently been a shining example, given the cork has not tainted it. We are very relived that sealing our wines with screw cap excludes this disappointment.

Tasting Note from Erin Larkin of The Wine Advocate (2022 Vintage)

92 Points - "The 2022 Pinot Noir leads with cherry and wild strawberry, garden mint (or is it a faint waft of eucalypt, instead?) and caper brine. In the mouth, the wine is silky and almost oily/velvety in its texture, with sweet blood orange, pink peppercorn and raspberry in the mix. This is a plush-feeling wine, one that ages very well over the decades. Although an unusual variety for Margaret River—the land of Chardonnay, Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc—Moss Wood has been a staunch advocate of Pinot Noir since the late 1970s/early 1980s. The warm and generally excellent season that was 2022 likely was a little warm for classical Pinot Noir, but this is looking excellent today, and it probably will do for a very long time to come. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap"
