This historic McLaren Vale winery began producing wine in 1895, vinifying 9,000 litres of a (mostly) dry red blend, destined for export to Britain. During the 1890s they built the first part of the winery consisting of a crusher, fermenting tanks, press and storage tanks, most of which still stands today. By 1910 they had 35 acres in production. Export to Britain of dry red blends, mostly made from Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz, steadily grew. In 1906 they started buying grapes to increase production.

Fast forward to the beginning of the 21st century. Stelvin caps replaced corks, overseas trade of bottled wine expanded, the Basket Press varietal range was established and two of their icon wines, the Cuthbert Cabernet and Hillside Shiraz, became two of the most collectible wines in Australia. Thin, sandy loam topsoils lie sparsely scattered over ancient deposits of bluestone, marble stone, limestone, quartz and ironstone. Rainfall is limited, often to less than 400 millimetres a year falling through winter and early spring. Subsurface clay retains valuable moisture, sustaining the vines through the long, warm and dry summers and autumns. The perfect, low-disease-pressure conditions in which to grow small, healthy bunches of compact, flavour-packed berries.

The Seven Acre vineyard was originally planted in 1990. Each vintage typically undergoes 24-30 months of maturation in American oak with a small amount of further ageing in the bottle before release.

The review: "Deep garnet-purple coloured, the Apricot Block Shiraz opens with aromas of crushed wild blueberries and mulberries with underlying touches of roses, black olives, cigar boxes and anise. Medium to full-bodied and generously fruited in the mouth, it gives a great concentration of blue and black fruit flavors with a crisp acid line, medium levels of rounded tannins and a long finish with a little pepper coming through. It is still just a little tightly wound.
