Chianti Classico is the cornerstone of the estate’s production. The vineyards are located in Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the southeastern part of the Chianti Classico appellation, to the southeast of Siena. Almost exclusively with a southwestern exposure, they sprawl across ventilated slopes at an altitude ranging from 320-420 meters above sea level. Geologically, the terrains are mixed: in the higher parts the soil is predominantly rock quartz and calcareous Albanese mixed with alluvial pebbles; stratiform sandstone and loam characterize the vineyards on the edge of the Colli Senesi in the direction of the Crete Senesi. The first vintage was produced in 1967. 2019 was an exceptional vintage for the region, and it shows in the classic Chianti.

Poggio al Sole is known for its excellent Chianti Classico, so Johannes Davaz was initially reluctant to plant Bordeaux varietals on his hill in Tuscany. But he can't argue with the results: the Poggio al Sole Ponente. This IGT Rosso Toscana (Super Tuscan) is made from 1/3 each of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Look for intense aromas and overall freshness. The taste is warm with notes of ripe fruits. Round and complex with ripe tannins, it shows hints of spice and minerality. Castellare di Castellina was born of the union of four estates (Castellare, Caselle, San Niccolò and Le Case) under the direction of owner Paolo Panerai, with the aim of producing wine of the best possible quality. This was in the 1970s when the so-called Renaissance of Italian wine had begun. A renaissance to which Castellare made its own contribution with a combination of tradition and innovation. They were the first to employ the Sangiovese clone now known as Sangioveto and were instrumental in introducing the use of the barrique, following the in-depth research and advice of Emile Peynaud, the most renowned oenologist in living memory. The vineyards occupy 33 hectares on the hillsides of a natural southeast-facing amphitheatre, at an average height of 370 meters above sea level. The vines are between 7 and over 45 years of age and yields per hectare are kept very low to obtain the maximum quality.
