"Time moves differently in the Highlands. This 2025 edition of the Sutherland Blended Malt was vatted in June 2025 with every intention of a prompt release. This liquid has enjoyed an unintended, restorative 8-month rest since blending, allowing the components to marry into a singular, wax-forward expression.
"Aged for a minimum of 6 years, this batch is a meticulous assembly of Sutherland’s finest: 73.72% Clynelish for that irreplaceable texture, 26.28% Dornoch Distillery spirit for Highland soul, and the obligatory “teaspoon” from the county’s other, legendary distillery."
Producer Tasting Note
Nose: the nose is an evocative mix of farm-fresh fats and bright, concentrated fruit. It opens with ground almonds and a generous spread of salted (proper) butter, followed by the nostalgic sweetness of melon cordial and tinned pineapple cubes. There is a raw, cereal-driven core of dusty barley grist, accompanied by the artisanal funk of IPA and ale yeast. as it breathes and opens, it turns "green" and vibrant - think first-press olive oil, camphor, crisp green apple, and the resinous edge of mango skin.
Palate: beautifully sweet and zesty with a remarkably cohesive mouthfeel. Initial notes of Robinson’s barley water and ripe Galia melon are brightened by a sharp, citrus-forward attack of pineapple juice, Amalfi lemon zest, and pithy grapefruit. A delicate sweetness of white grapes runs through the mid-palate, held together by that signature Sutherland weight.
Finish: elegant and impressively long. The waxiness truly takes hold here, leaving a final impression of freshly baked sourdough drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and a final, lingering rasp of lemon zest.

Mystery Malt Series 5 from Thompson Bros consists of 38 whiskies, ranging in age from 5 to 27 years. They are all single malt Scotch whiskies, bottled at 46.3%, but you won't know which whisky you've got until you take the bottle home and break the foil seal, and lift the cap. You might end up with a Dornoch 5 Year (0.63% chance), a Miltonduff 17 Year (2.23%), a Glen Garioch 27 Year (1.91%), or one of 35 other options. We are on always on the hunt for value, and a 27 year old Glen Garioch at 49.3% for just a tad over $300 fits the bill! This 1998 vintage Glen Garioch was supposedly matured in an oloroso sherry cask, but when the chaps at Thompson Bros. nosed it, they were pretty confident it was actually a Fino Sherry cask. Based on references in the tasting note, they might be right. Exclusive to KWM in Canada!

"We recently received a butt of Glen Garioch 1998, purchased blind based on the outstanding quality of previous casks from this vintage and with confidence, as the purchase order specified a 1st fill sherry butt. However, upon arrival and during our routine sensory analysis (someone's gotta do it), it became immediately apparent from visual assessment that this was not typical of 1st fill oloroso or px sherry, as we had initially expected. Instead, the spirit presented pronounced saline notes, followed by chamomile and fresh bread dough - characteristics that strongly suggest this cask is, in fact, a 1st fill fino sherry butt. We are now highly confident in that conclusion. the combination of distillate, time and oak interplay beautifully here. The nature of buying blind can be a bit risky, but very often those risks pay off in very interesting ways."
