Tokaj Classic was founded by a group of classical musicians who were well traveled and had tasted a variety of wines from different countries before coming to the unanimous conclusion that Tokaj was a diamond in the rough, just waiting to be polished. In the historic village of Mád, the musicians refurbished an old estate and acquired vineyards in the historical prime locations of Királyhegy (King’s Mountain), and Betsek, formerly owned by the Hungarian nobility. It was a region with a wine growing history dating back over 400 years. The musicians found that handling grapes and wine is comparable to teaching students of music. Just as musical talent in students is recognized and promoted, so is the redundant growth of grapes contained and shaped, their character noted. As in music, attention is paid to the slightest detail, and new interpretations are always sought. Each vintage becomes its own composition, maintaining its individual character.

Notes of green apple, citrus. Long on the finish. A classic dry Furmint. The grapes come from two world-famous vineyards "Király" and "Betsek" on the border of Mád. The wine's nickname "DaCapo" was given by a music-loving Polish company who, while visiting the winery, focused on this furmint and liked it so much that they constantly ordered a new bottle. Since the common language of the musicians is Italian, they asked: "Signore, DaCapo furmint". A perfect match for roast pork and fish as well as spicy Indian and Thai cuisine.

Located outside of Mád— the “Capital of Sweet Wines”— the vineyards of Tokaj Classic comprise 8 hectares in two of the very first classified Grand Cru vineyards of the world, Királyand Betsek. The winery is managed by two classical musicians, and unlike wineries in other regions, creates wine employing a completely unique and highly complex methodology practiced only in Tokaj. Winemaker, Imre Galambosi, was born into a family fully immersed in the Tokaji wine world, where they have been producing wines in the region for 1000 years. This production uses wild yeast for fermentation, fermenting wines slowly in stainless steel. This is their 6 puttonyos Tokaji (150gL), which has won six consecutive Gold Medals at the International Wine and Spirits Competition (UK). It has an elegant complexity and is a beautiful expression of their grand cru terroir.

The fact that Peter Wetzer makes any wine at all is a little astonishing. Firstly, he is located in Sopron, a small region on Hungary’s boarder with Austria. His absolutely tiny cellar (if you can even call it that) is in the basement of his family house, in a suburb; shockingly, it’s more complete than his newly obtained cellar, several stories under a house built in the 1700s that looked more like a demolition zone than a winery..His determination is bordering on insanity, but after seeing the sites he’s trying to replant, learning about the history of the town and the region, and tasting the wines, we understand how he keeps going. To fund this little project, he works a couple of days each week at a gas station – who said winemaking is glamorous?! With only a couple stainless steel tanks, a manual basket press, and some old barrels, he pushes onwards.

Hungary’s most widely planted white grape variety is Olaszrizling (which translates as “Italian Riesling”). It's a Central European variety that goes by a variety of names including Welschriesling in Austria, Riesling Italico in Italy and Romania, Laški Rizling in Slovenia, Rylink Vlašský in the Czech Republic, Rizling Italyanski in Serbia, and Rizling Vlašský in Slovakia. It is not related to German Riesling although it carries many of those attributes.

Fine quality Aszú berries with good flavour, balance and perfect botrytis were macerated in fermenting must for two days. After pressing and finishing fermentation, the wines were filled into 300 and 500-litre Hungarian oak casks in our extensive, deep, underground cellars to mature for over two years. The final blends were carefully crafted in the spring of 2020.
